When I was in my early 20s, I was diagnosed with a precancerous condition that nearly caused me to have a hysterectomy, preventing me from ever having children. At such a young age, this was a tough pill to swallow. Thankfully, my doctors were able to treat my condition, and I now have three beautiful boys.

I am not the first person in my family to have faced a cancer diagnosis. My father passed away from prostate cancer, which is one of the most preventable forms of cancer. My aunt passed away from lung cancer, my maternal grandfather died from colon cancer, and my paternal grandfather died from melanoma. My stepfather is currently being treated for bladder cancer, and my brother-in-law was treated for leukemia as a child. The drugs used in his treatment have continued to be the root of many of his health problems today. Cancer has ravaged my family, and I am taking a personal stance against it. On June 10, the team at Putnam Dental Associates will be joining together to participate in the inaugural Brewster Relay For Life will take place from 6 p.m. to midnight. Our team will be called “The Tooth Fairies,” and we would love for you to support us. Dr. Ferranti will also be racing with The Tooth Fairies. Here’s why: “Relay For Life is a celebration of life, both past and present. It represents all of our peers and family members who have fought against cancer. I have lost my grandmother and grandfather to cancer, and I am currently supporting friends and colleagues who are battling for their lives. A CHIP OFF THE OLD TOOTH Chipped and Broken Teeth
A chipped tooth can happen in the blink of an eye. From biting into a piece of candy to taking a hockey puck to the mouth, teeth break for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes, you may not even know a tooth has been broken until someone else points it out. In the event that you do chip or crack a tooth, the first course of action you should take is to schedule a dental appointment. While chipped teeth may not be all that painful, they are uncomfortable and can cause tongue bleeding. Sometimes they even make eating difficult. Left untreated, a broken tooth can also lead to infection. Prior to your appointment, there are a few steps you can take to minimize discomfort. To limit pain, take acetaminophen or ibuprofen. A piece of wax paraffin or gum will help keep any sharp edges of your tooth from cutting your tongue. You should avoid eating, but if you can’t, stick to soft foods. You can also buy temporary dental cement if you’re on vacation and cannot get an appointment for an extended period of time. Once we take a look at the damage, we can make an assessment on the best course of treatment. If the breakage is caused by the decay of the tooth or an old filling, we might recommend upgrading to a modern filling or removing the tooth entirely. For breaks and cracks, treatment may not be required. Your tooth may simply need polishing or a basic cosmetic filling. Deeper cracks, however, where the nerve is exposed, will often require a root canal and a crown. If you want to avoid getting a broken tooth in the first place, there are a few precautions you can take. First, wear a mouthguard for any activity where your teeth may be in danger of forceful contact. Steer clear of hard foods, and do not chew ice. Many chips are avoidable with a little bit of care.

Save the Bees
Spring is officially here. The grass is green again, trees have regrown their leaves, and flowers are emerging from the earth. Busy bees are ready to pollinate the new blossoms, but sadly, the rusty patched bumble bee may not be around to pollinate much longer. Bumble bees are a small species of bee native to much of the Northern Hemisphere. There are 250 species of bumble bees in the world, and the rusty patched bumble bee is one of 47 species native to North America. Most bumble bees have larger body sizes and denser hairs than other bees. This makes it possible for them to remain active in cool temperatures, low light levels, and high elevations. Rusty patched bumble bees are “buzz pollinators,” which means they cling tightly to their flowers and vibrate their flight muscles to collect pollen. In this way, the bees pollinate blueberries, cranberries, clover, and tomatoes. Once ranging from North Dakota to Maine and Quebec, and as far south as Georgia, the bee’s population has declined 87 percent since the 1990s. Experts now consider the rusty patched bumble bee to be on the brink of extinction.
Though it can take years to place an animal on the endangered species list, President Obama made the rusty patched bumble bee a priority by placing it on the list in January.
The reasons for the bee’s decline are not fully understood, but it is hypothesized that habitat loss, diseases, parasites, pesticides, pollution, and climate change may have something to do with it. Thankfully, not all hope is lost. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has some ideas about how the public can help stop the bee’s decline. Individuals can plant native flowers, limit their use of pesticides, and avoid cutting grass and garden plants after summer to provide a habitat for bees during the winter. This, along with the critically endangered species status, may prevent the bee from extinction, and even increase future populations.
