SEPPELT WINES POSEIDON STAKES

BY ANDREW LEMON

I t is more than 110 years since Poseidon last raced at Flemington, but he remains one of the most admired of all Australian racehorses. Thirteen horses have won the Victoria Derby-Melbourne Cup double in the same year – among them Poseidon and his dam Martini-Henry. Martini-Henry and Poseidon are among only four horses to have won the AJC and Victoria Derby double plus a Melbourne Cup. Eleven have won the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup in the same season. Poseidon is the only one of them to win the Caulfield Cup twice. Seven have won the Caulfield Cup twice. Poseidon and Rising Fast are the only ones to do this twice in succession. Poseidon also won the AJC and VRC St Legers. At three years he won 11 of his 14 starts, and at four years 7 of 12. Only the burden of 64.8 kg kept him from adding a second Melbourne Cup in 1907. There was no Cox Plate in those days – otherwise he would have won that too. These are the raw statistics. Understandably Poseidon was an equine hero. He was called after the Greek god of the sea, earthquakes and horses. Few thoroughbreds have been so well named. Poseidon is the only one of them to win the Caulfield Cup twice
