RUSSELL | Nancy Neville is a typical wom- an in the middle years of life. She appears healthy and has a cheerful face. Who wo ul d think that , fiv e years ago , she had a do u b l e -lu ng transp l ant after her own lu ngs began fai l ing d u e to p ul monary fi- brosis. Ne v i ll e ’ s P F is idiopathic , meaning doctors don ’ t know why it de v e l oped , b u t it came on extreme l y fast. “I was fee l ing some shortness of breath ,” says the mother of two , “ and I’ d p u t on a bit of weight , so I didn ’ t think m u ch abo u t it. ” Soon she fo u nd going u pstairs di ffi c ul t and went to the doctor. “ Within a month I had a lu ng biopsy and they said I had idiopathic p ul monary fi brosis , and at the rate it was progressing I had l ess than two years to l i v e. T he on l y chance I might ha v e was a do u b l e lu ng transp l ant. ” At that time her da u ghter was aged 1 2 and her son was 1 8. She was on l y 46 herse l f and wanted to l i v e to see her chi l dren grow. ca v ity had shr u nk , meaning that on l y sma ll lu ngs co ul d be transp l anted. I n the mean - time , she needed to mo v e to T oronto to be near appropriate care whi l e she waited. I n Ju ne she mo v ed to an apartment in downtown T oronto , l ea v ing her h u sband and chi l dren behind. At fi rst she was ab l e to get aro u nd by herse l f , a l tho u gh she was on oxygen contin u o u s l y. I n December , doctors to l d her she needed a caregi v er. T he ordea l was not on l y hard on her b u t a l so on her fami l y. H er h u sband mo v ed down to l ook after her , their son stayed at home and their da u ghter went to l i v e with friends. T he co u p l e had debated se ll- ing their home in R u sse ll and mo v ing. “T he kids didn ’ t want to mo v e , to l ea v e their friends , and we didn ’ t want to mo v e either ,” she reca ll s. Ne v i ll e is origina ll y from Deep Ri v er and had l i v ed in Ottawa. She and her h u sband had mo v ed to R u sse ll many years ear l ier beca u se they wanted to raise their chi l dren in a sma ll town. Says Ne v i ll e , “I’ m so happy we didn ’ t ha v e to l ea v e. We l o v e this l itt l e town. ” H er h u sband was responsib l e for main - taining two ho u seho l ds on one income. T he wait for s u itab l e do - nor organs began. Be - ca u se Ne v i ll e ’ s lu ngs had atrophied , her chest

Beca u se her lu ngs are sma ll, she can - not engage in stren u o u s acti v ity , b u t she is so thankf ul to be a l i v e these side e ff ects are minor. She is back working fo u r days a week. “T o get a second chance at l ife is tr ul y a mirac l e. ” What has changed since ? “I don ’ t worry as m u ch as I u sed to , or care abo u t l itt l e things anymore. I j u st l i v e for each day. ” When asked what message she wo ul d l ike to re l ate she answers witho u t hesitation. “ Don ’ t l ose hope. Anybody waiting for a transp l ant , it ’ s hard to get thro u gh , b u t yo u ha v e to keep fi ghting for yo u rse l f. And a l so , I u rge peop l e to register to be donors and to te ll yo u r l o v ed ones. B u t it is an indi v id u a l choice. ” T his year Ne v i ll e is in v o lv ed in the R u sse ll
