Which brings us to the phone call. One afternoon, Marie’s employer called. The super fund details she had provided when she first started, the ones she had carried over from her previous job, did not match. Something in the account information was off. The contributions had not been going through, not for six months, and not just once, but for the whole six months she was there. Marie did the mental maths standing right there on the spot and felt her stomach drop to somewhere around the level of her aching feet. Now Marie was angry, and completely reasonably so. Six months is not a rounding error. Six months of contributions that she had been mentally adding up, quietly factoring into her sense of financial security, had been going precisely nowhere. trying to flex; she just felt that she was already a step ahead of most people her age. She had set up her super when she was at her last job, done all the paperwork and nominated the fund and honestly felt pretty good about herself for doing it. She had even gone down a bit of a rabbit hole Googling compound interest one night, which she figured had to count for something. Every pay cycle since, she had just assumed it was all ticking away nicely in the background, building and growing the way it was supposed to. There was an app, but she just never downloaded it. She knew the fund’s phone number was on the website. She had just never called. She was 19, and she was busy, and honestly, she assumed it was all just happening the way it was supposed to, the way everything does when you set it up and walk away.
