A NOTE FROM SYLVIA It seems just like yesterday I was trying to maneuver around icy ruts and snowbanks with my car in the alley behind my house. Where did the summer go? Is it really August, when we suddenly jump into overdrive to fit in those final picnics and find a few moments to relax outside before the fall air chills us to the bone? Well, it IS August, so do take time to enjoy the warmth, sunshine and remaining days of summer. I hope all of you will stop by and say hello to TPT at the Minnesota State Fair this year. The TPT Getaway is located at the intersection of Lee and Underwood, and is a great place to take a break and share your favorite TPT and PBS stories. We have an obstacle course, lawn games, cutouts of your favorite PBS characters, and the Nursing Nest (sponsored by WIC) for those who need to nurse, pump, or change a diaper. Please come by to renew your membership or say hello to some of our TPT staff. Besides the fair, I will be filling my summer evenings with world-class musical performances. At 8 p.m. on August 4 on TPT2 This is Minnesota Orchestra airs a special collaboration with singer, songwriter, and essayist Dessa. In addition, Great Performances will showcase two tremendous concerts this month on TPT 2: Leonard Bernstein’s Kaddish Symphony will air on August 21 at 8 p.m., and Vienna Philharmonic Summer Nights will air August 25 at 8 p.m. I want to end by thanking all of you for your support of TPT. You help TPT provide access to entertaining, educational, and inspiring programming for the entire community. Your support fosters TPT’s technological innovation, including the replacement of our broadcast antenna and transition to a new customer service system that will allow us to interact with members in a more personalized way. A Conversation with Christian Siebeneck, Chief Technology and Operations Officer
What sets TPT apart in public media?
Christian Siebeneck joined Twin Cities PBS (TPT) as Chief Technology Officer in December of 2021 and was promoted in 2022 to also serve as the Chief Operations Officer. This is an abridged version of our conversation. You can read the full interview at tpt.org/MeetChristian.
As a community licensee we're able to support the community without being controlled by a university or state entity like many stations are. This gives TPT more flexibility to innovate and change what we do as an organization.
What excites you about public media?
What innovation are you working on now?
What really motivated me to work in public media is that I was able to go from serving shareholders to being able to support a mission. It is very rewarding to know that people depend on the work you do. I have had members share with me that PBS was their only connection to the outside world, and they relied on that connection. Some of my favorite moments in public media have been when I get to talk with members, work through their issues, and make sure they are getting the programming they rely on.
A lot of the work we've been doing has been inward facing to increase security and responsiveness to viewers. This summer, we are replacing our antenna due to age so that we can continue to serve our broadcast audience. We are also transitioning to a new system to support our viewer services so that we can provide faster and more personalized service to our viewers, members, and donors. We are also working to update and enhance our digital platforms, to increase the number and quality of digital offerings. The most exciting upcoming effort is ATSC 3.0, the next generation of broadcast technology. We're hopeful we'll be able to launch a signal within the next year. ATSC 3.0 will give us the opportunities to enhance audio and video, and will give us the potential to add more channels to our broadcast lineup, giving viewers even more options than they have today. ATSC 3.0 also gives us the opportunity to provide greater support for public health and safety initiatives through datacasting, a capability that allows us to send secure messages to public health and safety officials over our antenna.

Why is it important to maintain broadcast service as media shifts more toward digital? What a lot of people don't realize is the Twin Cities television market has been a traditionally strong broadcast market. Historically, TPT has been one of the strongest over-the-air broadcasters in the PBS system. Plus, we are seeing a resurgence in broadcast viewing in the millennial population, with an uptick in that demographic going out and purchasing antennas to watch free local content. As broadcast changes, I believe that public media and TPT will be the last ones to turn off our transmitters, because the members and viewers that we support rely on our broadcast service. We're committed to making sure whoever needs to access our content can do so.
Where do you see TPT in the next 5 to 10 years?
I see TPT continuing to be an innovative organization that is always trying to be a leader in the PBS system. I see us growing our digital offerings while maintaining our over-the-air broadcasts.

A lot of shows are available for all to stream online. Episodes marked as “Passport” are shows you’ll need to log-in to watch, whether that’s online or on the app.

Next Avenue Announces the Launch of Caregiving in America: The 24/7 Caregiver The hub will provide resources, support, and expert advice to all caregivers By Jessica Prody
Caregiving can be lonely. A new resource from Next Avenue is committed to helping caregivers find support. Founded in 2012, Next Avenue is a national online platform produced by Twin Cities PBS (TPT) dedicated to covering the issues that matter most as we age. Next Avenue has established itself as a leader in exploring aspects of aging and caregiving that often are not openly discussed, such as caregiving in blended families and caregiving when mental illness or substance abuse is involved. In July, Next Avenue launched Caregiving in America: The 24/7 Caregiver, a space for those engaged in all forms of caregiving. “Next Avenue has been a platform for readers to engage in essential conversations around aging and readers have shared how important they have found our resources for caregivers,” explains Julie Pfitzinger, Managing Editor of Next Avenue. “The 24/7 Caregiver solidifies Next Avenue’s commitment to serve all caregivers with information and support.” Funded in part by The John A. Hartford Foundation, The 24/7 Caregiver includes a monthly newsletter, articles highlighting caregiving experiences, and the opportunity to receive advice from caregiving expert Jason Resendez in a monthly “Ask the Expert” column. The column will be informed by additional experts, highlight solutions, and link to useful caregiving resources. Resendez is the President and CEO of the National Alliance for Caregiving, where he leads research, policy, and innovation initiatives to build health, wealth, and equity for America’s 53 million family caregivers. Resendez is a nationally recognized
expert on family care, aging, and the science of inclusion in research. In 2020, he was named one of America’s top Influencers in Aging by Next Avenue alongside others including Michael J. Fox and Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy. Designed for the “everyday caregiver," The 24/7 Caregiver recognizes all forms of caregiving. Whether you check on a friend, care for a loved one, or pick up medicine for your neighbor, you do critical caregiving work and are invited to join the conversations at www.nextavenue.org/the-24-7- caregiver.

Hartford Foundation In 2009, after graduating from college, I thought my first job would be doing something related to the political science and criminology degrees I had worked hard to earn. But just four years after I set my sights on becoming a lawyer, I landed a different kind of role, one that, at the time, I never knew existed: I became a millennial family caregiver to my grandmother. The Real Cost of Being a Millennial Caregiver By Vanessa Steil
Fast forward more than a decade later, and I'm now in good company with an estimated 10 million
companionship and care but were 100% time well spent.
Naturally, as my grandmother continued to age, my visits began to center around taking her to doctor's appointments, helping her with grocery shopping, and driving her where she needed to go as she began to feel less comfortable behind the wheel. I've always felt that being a caregiver to my grandmother was the greatest honor and privilege. But it came at a cost that many women face as they lose an estimated $324,044 in wages, pensions, retirement funds and benefits due to caregiving, according to the Family Caregiver Alliance. That cost to me was my career. After more than a decade of caregiving, as my caregiving duties expanded, I decided to leave the workforce in 2022 to start my consulting agency where I could control my schedule and hours.

millennial caregivers, according to AARP, a number that, by my estimates and those tracking these kinds of metrics, is only going to grow as 10,000 Baby Boomers turn 65 every day, a trend that will continue until the last one reaches that milestone in 2029. When I first returned to my hometown, seeing my grandmother, who lived less than an hour away in a 55+ retirement community, instantly became a part of my weekly routine. My grandmother and I have a special bond that makes talking numerous times a day feel natural. My in-person visits were equal parts

In Greenville, Mississippi, efforts to contain the river pitted the majority black population against an aristocratic plantation family, the Percys.
