HOW SOUTH ATLANTA INJURY LAWYERS IS CHANGING THE GAME

E very year provides new

opportunities and complications. Our firm saw some incredible

success this year, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. Teri and I both worked on complex cases that challenged our legal skills. In fact, the more cases we worked on, the more we recognized an underserved area of our community. We saw a need for personal injury lawyers, and instead of referring clients to another firm, Teri and I looked at how we could help. That’s what led to our decision to expand our services into personal injury. We’ve created a new division of our firm known as South Atlanta Injury Lawyers. Our goal is to help clients who have been injured or are victims of negligence and security cases. It’s very satisfying to see this venture take off, and we’ve been fortunate enough to serve many people already. We can’t go into detail about our cases in a public forum, but helping others who’ve been injured is incredibly rewarding. To help with this important expansion, we added a new attorney, Charleston Williamson, to our practice. He’s amazing to work with, and we’re so fortunate to have him. Having three attorneys under one roof is certainly an adjustment, but it’s been very beneficial for both Teri and me.

Charleston is definitely the right person to pair with. He’s smart, straightforward to work with, and incredibly passionate about what he does. When you have someone like that join the ranks, the transition is no effort at all. It’s nice to have a balance of age and gender “ PUSHING MYSELF IS SOMETHING I THINK WILL MAKE ME A BETTER ATTORNEY, MOTHER, AND PERSON AS A WHOLE.

With this new expansion into personal injury, we look forward to serving more people this year. Beyond professional pursuits, I’m extremely excited to run my first marathon. In November, I did the Rock and Roll half-marathon in Savannah and caught the bug. When I finished, I saw a woman there who was finishing her 99th marathon, and I thought to myself, “If she can do 99, I can do one.” Certainly, it will take a lot of training and preparation, but personal accomplishments are just as important as professional ones. Pushing myself is something I think will make me a better attorney, mother, and person. We’re incredibly excited about what the future holds. If the past year is any indication, all three of us will have opportunities to make a significant impact on our community.

as well, because the way we each see the world helps the firm serve a wider breadth of clients. We’re happy to have this new dynamic and excited for what the future holds.

There aren’t many instances where lawyers watch the fantastical portrayals of their careers on TV and think to themselves, “Yep, they sure got it right.” Television productions often inaccurately fictionalize the day-to-day life of an attorney, but they can still be entertaining. Here are two of the best new series as chosen by lawyers. 2 NEW LAW TV SERIES ATTORNEYS ACTUALLY LOVE HAVE YOU SEEN THESE? Billy Bob Thornton plays a washed-up alcoholic lawyer, Billy McBride, who somewhere in the midst of it all, finds his way into a legal pickle. Previously a competent lawyer whose alcoholism caused him to fall from the graces of the biggest firm in Los Angeles — where his name still resides on the wall — McBride’s daily activities consist of sitting at a bar outside the motel he lives in. When Patty Solis-Papagian, real estate agent and DUI lawyer by trade, brings a proposition to the table, Billy gets the opportunity to bring down the giant he built. What transpires is a myriad of twists and turns that all make for gripping television. Thornton’s work in season one got him a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Television Series Drama, but season two fell mightily short of expectations. GOLIATH

A GUIDE TO DOWNSIZING WHAT TO KEEP, GIFT, DONATE, AND THROW OUT Many homeowners reach a point in their lives when they’re ready to move from the house they raised their families in to something smaller and more manageable. While finding the right place can be a challenge, the hardest part of downsizing is often sorting through a lifetime’s worth of possessions. This process, called contents downsizing, is much easier when you follow this four-step system. START WITH THE JUNK Beginning your downsizing with the hardest items will only lead to frustration and inaction. Instead, start by tackling areas of the house that are full of documents, knickknacks, and boxes you haven’t touched in years. These will be the easiest to part with and will put you in the right downsizing mindset. DONATE UNWANTED ITEMS The next category contains items that are no longer valuable to you or your family but may be useful to others. These items can be donated to one of many worthy organizations, such as Goodwill, the Salvation Army, or St. Vincent de Paul. Donations are a way to give back to the less fortunate instead of simply giving or throwing things away. GIVE GIFTS TO LOVED ONES If you have children, they will undoubtedly want to keep a few cherished mementos and precious possessions. Deciding who will keep what can be a sensitive subject, so you’ll need to devise an equitable way to divvy up the goods. Some families engage in the process collaboratively, but there should always be some communication before anything is thrown out. Your kids may value certain items more than you ever realized. If you suspect a certain heirloom could be a source of contention, it’s best to hold on to it and make it part of your estate plan. ONLY KEEP THE ESSENTIALS After completing the first three steps, you should be left with only those items you actually use and those that have the most sentimental value to you. These are the objects worth bringing to your new home. BONUS TIP: COLOR CODE EACH CATEGORY Odds are that you’ll find junk and valuables stored right next to each other. If you don’t have time to physically separate them at the moment, use different colored Post-it notes to keep everything organized when it comes time to move.

5 QUESTIONS PROSPECTIVE EMPLOYERS CANNOT ASK YOU ARE YOU ON THE JOB HUNT?

2. WHAT IS YOUR FINANCIAL SITUATION?

Did you know January is the most popular month for job seekers? According to the job posting giant Monster.com, the top career search day in 2017 was Jan. 4. In fact, six out of the 10 most common job hunting dates occurred in January as well. Many prospective employees thrive on the potential ahead of them, and in rare cases, employers take advantage of that. Here is a list of a few questions interviewers cannot ask. 1. WHEN DO YOU PLAN TO HAVE KIDS? Nearly any question relating to pregnancy is considered off-limits. In some cases, employers may not want to hire a candidate if they are expecting children in the future because of maternity leave.

ethnicity, veteran status, or disability if you do not want to.

While some employers require a credit check before you can be hired, these checks also require your consent. Inquiring about nearly any personal financial matter is considered a breach of rights.

5. ARE YOU MARRIED? Questions regarding your relationship status can lead to sexual orientation discrimination or other significant prejudices. Companies cannot make a hiring decision based on an individual’s marital status because it’s strictly against civil rights and is not considered a proper hiring practice. If you’re on the job hunt or have possibly been terminated because of one of these situations, contact us today. Your career is where you spend the majority of your time, and you should be confident about your value to your employer. Let us help you find that.

3. HOW OLD ARE YOU? Age discrimination is a very real

occurrence with certain companies who look to only hire young employees. A company cannot ask about your age unless it’s to ensure you are at or over the age for legal employment. 4. ARE YOU DISABLED? Many job applications will offer this as an optional question, but it is imperative to understand that you do not have to disclose any information about race,
