himself, who makes no effort to save others,— those that are ‘ready to perish.’ . . . Blessed be God, on our Rock, which is Christ, there is room for all. The cry rings out, ‘Yet there is room!' And since we have not one godless acquaint ance, or neighbor, or friend, or mem ber of our family, but needs to be saved, and may be saved, oh, with what divine wisdom, and love, and patience, should we labor to win them to Christ, and win for ourselves this starry crown! They that are wise shall shine as the bright ness of the firmament, and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars forever and ever.” The late Dr. Maltbie D. Babcock wrote: “ If Jesus Christ is everything to me, I know He can be everything to any man, and because I know it, then woe is me if I will not do all that is in my power to let every man, who does not know Jesus Christ, share Him with me. There is no escape from this logic. If I love Jesus Christ, which means if I am loyal to Him, which means if I keep His commandments, I am in touch with everybody to the ends of the earth who needs Him, and I cannot wash my hands and say that you must excuse me from this matter.” Those who sincerely follow Jesus Christ will become fishers of men. Their chief privilege and joy is to lead others to have the salvation which they themselves possess. a » as SAFE TO DEE BY Concerning Dr. Horace Bushnell, who has been so widely quoted in the adver tising of the Inter-church Movement, Dr. L. W. Munhall some years ago related the following: I met an aged Congregational minis ter, who was pastor in Hartford, Connec ticut, during Dr. Bushnell’s pastorate in the same city. He told me this: “ I spent an hour with Dr. Bushnell the
day he died. He said to me, “ Doctor, I greatly fear some things I have said and written about the atonement may prove to be misleading and do irreparable harm.’ He was lying upon his back with his hands clasped over his breast. He lay there with closed eyes, in silence, for some moments, his face indicating great anxiety. Directly, opening his eyes and raising his hands he said: ‘O Lord Jesus, Thou knowest that I hope for mercy alone through Thy shed blood.’ ” So we see that speaking “ great swelling words” against the atonement by blood, is very high sound ing, and according to a certain school, gives evidence of great learning, and breadth of vision, but “ without shed ding of blood there is no remission,” is safer to die by. . THE GREATEST VALUES “ I would think it a greater happi ness,” said Matthew Henry, “ to gain one soul to Christ than mountains of silver and gold to myself. If I do not gain souls, I shall enjoy all other gains with very little satisfaction, and I would rather beg my bread from door to door than fail to undertake this great work.” He who loves the Word will receive the power to understand what he loves. .............................................. iiniininiuiyi
