The Competition That Brings the Best in the State

other clubs. You meet many great people, and it’s a bonus that they bring a new pool of competition for our members. We even see people who took lessons here as kids join in on the fun. After graduating from college, they return to Cumberland and their tennis roots and are still playing the sport. We’re always happy to see that they’ve stuck with it. That’s one of the best things about tennis — it’s a lifelong sport. I recently had a conversation with our team about how many sports have an age limit; it’s hard to find leagues and competitors as you get older. With tennis, you can play forever, and at the club, there’s always an opportunity for a match. I look forward to seeing you on the courts this summer, whether you’re watching a match or playing in one. -Dave Morin

time they get to test out our new courts. The participating clubs include facilities throughout Rhode Island, so we’re excited to show off the best of Fore Court. We have 26 teams playing out of Fore Court this year, including men and women, players as young as 18, and up to the 65-and-over league. Skill levels range from beginner to advanced. Occasionally, some of our instructors take part. It’s a great opportunity for our members to put their skills to the test and see how they match up against the new competition. From there, the top teams will move on to the sectionals and play matches against other New England teams. Our USTA league is comprised of teams from five states. Many of our members will show off their ace serves and smashing volleys they’ve been working on, so come out to cheer them on — when you’re not playing, of course. During this time of year, I spend a lot of time outdoors. When I’m not at the club, you’ll likely find me working in our yard or garden, completing my latest landscaping project. I have my sights on building a rock wall this summer, so I’ll be putting some energy into that. What I really look forward to, though, are the exciting matches Fore Court hosts in the summer with players from all over the state. Association (USTA) matches. We’re proud to be part of this program. The USTA has been around forever, and their mission is to promote and develop the sport of tennis all over the nation.
