The Competition That Brings the Best in the State

other clubs. You meet many great people, and it’s a bonus that they bring a new pool of competition for our members. We even see people who took lessons here as kids join in on the fun. After graduating from college, they return to Cumberland and their tennis roots and are still playing the sport. We’re always happy to see that they’ve stuck with it. That’s one of the best things about tennis — it’s a lifelong sport. I recently had a conversation with our team about how many sports have an age limit; it’s hard to find leagues and competitors as you get older. With tennis, you can play forever, and at the club, there’s always an opportunity for a match. I look forward to seeing you on the courts this summer, whether you’re watching a match or playing in one. -Dave Morin

time they get to test out our new courts. The participating clubs include facilities throughout Rhode Island, so we’re excited to show off the best of Fore Court. We have 26 teams playing out of Fore Court this year, including men and women, players as young as 18, and up to the 65-and-over league. Skill levels range from beginner to advanced. Occasionally, some of our instructors take part. It’s a great opportunity for our members to put their skills to the test and see how they match up against the new competition. From there, the top teams will move on to the sectionals and play matches against other New England teams. Our USTA league is comprised of teams from five states. Many of our members will show off their ace serves and smashing volleys they’ve been working on, so come out to cheer them on — when you’re not playing, of course. What I enjoy most and what many look forward to about the USTA matches is the opportunity to play against folks from

During this time of year, I spend a lot of time outdoors. When I’m not at the club, you’ll likely find me working in our yard or garden, completing my latest landscaping project. I have my sights on building a rock wall this summer, so I’ll be putting some energy into that. What I really look forward to, though, are the exciting matches Fore Court hosts in the summer with players from all over the state. Association (USTA) matches. We’re proud to be part of this program. The USTA has been around forever, and their mission is to promote and develop the sport of tennis all over the nation. 3 Reasons to Work Out With a Friend Stay Accountable With the Buddy System

yourself to improve. Even if your partner is stronger, faster, or in better shape than you, the drive to close the gap between your capabilities can be a big motivating factor. Psychologists call this mental push to avoid being the weak link the “Köhler effect.” In small groups, those who begin weaker often push themselves to improve the most. Why not put this psychological phenomenon to work for you? STAY ACCOUNTABLE The most valuable reason to have a workout buddy is accountability. Just having a dedicated person to ask you if you’ve met your fitness goals can have a significant impact on how regularly you exercise. In fact, something as simple as a bimonthly check-in has been shown to help people increase the amount of time they spend working out. A Stanford University study on the impact of social support on physical activity found that an occasional check-in boosted test subjects’ workout times by an average of 78 percent. This is part of a growing body of research that suggests positive social support may be a key factor in motivation. Even if you can’t actually exercise alongside your workout buddy, just checking in on one another’s goals can make a huge difference.

When you work out alone, it can be tempting to cut corners and get comfortable. After all, if you cheat on a pullup or don’t swing that kettlebell as high as you should, who will know? That’s where a workout buddy comes in. Here are three ways hitting the gym with a friend can make your workouts safer and more effective — and a lot more fun!

ENSURE PROPER FORM When you don’t perform an exercise correctly, you may not even be working the right muscles, which makes all of your hard work pointless. At best, you’ll cheat yourself out of the full benefits of your workout. At worst, you risk injury. By working out with someone else, you can spot one another and keep an eye out for lapses in form. You and your partner can keep each other honest, ensuring your routine stays safe and effective. GET A LITTLE COMPETITIVE Whether you make your workouts explicitly competitive or not, working out with someone is a great way to subconsciously push

Get Personal Training From a Pro and Work With Adam Ready to Make a Change?

His small group trainees have already found success, from a group of local teachers who completed their first Spartan race and are preparing to train

You may remember seeing Adam here a few months back when he shared his passion for helping folks ace the outdoor obstacle course. Now Adam is adding personal training to his area of expertise. As a certified trainer, he brings an extensive background and empathetic approach to his program because he’s been there. “I’ve gone through my own transformation. I used to weigh 215 pounds,” Adam explains. For anyone wanting to lose weight, Adam has firsthand knowledge about best strategies, and he’s ready to help you reach your weight loss and fitness goals. “I’ve done it myself, and I’ve seen what works and what doesn’t from an exercise and nutrition standpoint. It’s another avenue I’m excited to work on,” Adam says. Drawing on his background in adventure racing and obstacle course training, Adam uses a total-body approach that challenges every muscle group. “Everything we do uses the entire body. It translates well for anyone, and it can be adapted for anyone. You don’t have to have a bunch of equipment or tools around. We use basic equipment and body weight exercises so you can replicate the workouts at home,” Adam says. Adam now offers personal training in addition to the obstacle course and small group training he’s been doing here at Fore Court.

with Adam for their second, to a more recent group of medical professionals who’ve never done an adventure race and are planning to complete a Tough Mudder. “None of them have done this before; they’re newbies. Some of the folks have never done a workout program before. It’s fun to train folks who are new to this.” Adam’s personal training consists of one-on-one indoor training and basic nutrition information. All levels and goals are welcome, including those recovering from injuries or looking to lose weight. A more extensive nutrition program will also be available. If you’d like to train with Adam, stop by the front desk, or reach him directly at CoachAdamOCR@gmail.com or 401-533-8275. He’s ready to help you take the next step in your fitness journey.

Learning That Doesn’t Feel Like School

creativity, time management, and more. Even better, it doesn’t feel like learning; it feels like fun. Encourage your older children to take the reins for preparing regular meals throughout the summer. You can pick guiding themes, like “a trip to Mexico” or “pasta party,” but let them choose the recipes and prep the meals on their own. FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY: AN EDUCATIONAL FIELD TRIP Field trips always inspire excitement in students, and you’ll find the same goes for your family members. You can tailor your destination to the interests of your kids for maximum engagement. If you have a family of art lovers, head to a museum for some inspiration and discussion. Kids who prefer the outdoors will enjoy a nature walk or hike. You can bring along a field guide to identify flora and fauna. These trips may not pack the thrill of a water park, but they’re fun in an entirely different way.

Every summer, parents across the country have to deal with the same delicate problem. They want to make sure their kids continue to learn without feeling like they’re being assigned tasks. After all, summer homework is every child’s worst nightmare. Luckily, you don’t have to rely on math problems and book reports to keep your child’s development from taking a two- month vacation. Here are a few mentally stimulating activities that are as educational as they are fun. Bubbles fascinate young children, so why not spend a day making your own solution and experimenting by blowing different types of bubbles? The formula is simple: 1 part dish soap (Dawn or Joy work best) to 10 parts water. Optionally, you can also include 1/4 part glycerin. The process of making the solution will teach ratios, and finding creative ways to blow bubbles fosters problem-solving skills and creative thinking. FOR LITTLE ONES: HOMEMADE BUBBLES

FOR TEENAGERS: FAMILY DINNER PARTY Cooking teaches so many important skills: math, science, nutrition, concentration, cultural understanding, following directions,
