Tax refund support Trustees with the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) have no trouble with voicing their support for Bill C-241, a private member’s bill presented to Parliament for consideration. The legislation, if it reaches the third-reading-and-approval stage, would amend the federal Excise Tax Act to increase the GST rebate rate for school boards and districts from the current 68 per cent to 100 per cent. Those arguing for the bill claim that charging the GST on school board purchases adds to a layer of taxation onto district costs and takes away money that could be spent on classroom needs. UCDSB Chairman Jeff McMillan presented a letter of support for Bill C-241 to trustees to review and approve, during a recent meeting. Copies of the letter have gone out to all MPs of ridings within the UCDSB’s jurisdiction, urging them to support the private member’s bill when it comes up for reading in parliament. –Gregg Chamberlain
