Research & Professional Education

o Space Technology Laboratory (STL)  Description: The Space Technology Laboratory (STL) performs research into spaceflight qualified hardware and algorithms. Research in this facility is keyed to understanding proximity operations, relative motion, optical navigation, and design and test capabilities especially for nano-satellites. This is directly related to the design, build, test, and operation of small satellite technologies.  Core Equipment • 400 ft2 Class 10,000 clean room for assembly and integration of spaceflight hardware • 1m x 1m x 1m test volume ultra-high vacuum thermal vacuum chamber for space environmental testing • Sawyer 7DOF robots for use as a proximity operation and optical sensors testbed • Optical calibration and test system, including an optical bench  Access to this facility may be restricted due to the proprietary and/or restricted nature of space flight hardware, software, and algorithms.  Estimated operational date January 2019. o Composites Laboratory  Description: The Composites Laboratory is equipped to enable fundamental and applied research-and development in emerging composite technologies that leverages gains made in advancing complex integrated and unitized composites.  Core Equipment • Autoclave • Curing Oven • Hot Press • Walk-in freezer for storage  Estimated operational date for this laboratory is summer 2018. o Materials Laboratory  Description: The Materials Lab is equipped to enable advanced materials research, modeling, and testing of new materials, and structures made from them. Of particular interest are nano-structured and lightweight aerospace materials and devices.  Core Equipment • Optical Metallurgical Microscope • X Ray Micro- computerized tomography (CT) Scanner

• Sample Prep Machines • Micro Hardness Tester

• Scanning Electron Microscope: This unit offers surface analysis (microstructure, failure, quality control, measurements) as well as element analysis with the EDX attachment. • Chemical vapor deposition CVD tube furnace • Magnetron sputtering system; physical vapor deposition system (PVD) • Raman spectrometer • Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer (DMA) • Powder jetting metal 3D printer • High temperature heat treatment vacuum furnace (up to 1400C)

• Drying vacuum furnace (up to 350C) • Hot-disk transient plane system (TPS) • 3-points probe
