... to ‘stick to the script’, and the disdain that he has drawn from a corrupt establishment has simply helped to further his cause. He has refused to be shackled by the political correctness that has for so long strangled political debate in America – and here in Britain. I can only suggest that the democratic revolution that we’re seeing now – with Trump and Brexit – is the direct responsibility of those who opposed both.

RE: Trump

Dear Josiah, Before we get on to Trump, I’d like to take some time to call attention to the fundamental pointlessness of this exercise. Neither of us are going to be convinced by the other’s argument and the odds of any reader having their world view altered, rather than entrenched, is negligible. Fundamentally, this is a form of pseudo-intellectual bear- baiting, only slightly above the toing and froing of Prime Minister’s Questions. With that out of the way, I’d like to address what passes for your points. You claim that Donald Trump doesn’t hate foreigners. For all we know, this may be correct. He may just be cynically manipulating others’ hatred of foreigners in order to attain power. However, the fact that both he and his father before him were shown repeatedly to refuse housing to applicants based on their race would incline me to believe that he is being genuine. His promises of ‘border security’ are bunkum: consider that the majority of illegal immigrants don’t smuggle themselves over the border, but arrive legally on work visas which then expire – so no Antimexikaner Schutzwall will fix the ‘problem’. Furthermore, your assertion that ‘all patriotic American citizens’ supported Trump is a fascinating one. What a state America must be in where fewer than half of its voters are patriots. Surely this is a sign of a nation in decline. I find your assertion that Trump has done well ‘aside from the controversy’ rather mendacious: his administration has yet to do something that isn’t controversial. Even the bipartisan support for bombing a Middle Eastern country was undercut by a backlash from his key supporting demographic – Nazis on the internet. The idea that Trump is striking some blow against political correctness, or that political correctness ‘shackled’ America, is laughable. A culture which had no problem with repeatedly calling Mr Obama a monkey (a liberal online journal, The Awl, has

It will come as no surprise to you that if you keep labelling as ‘racist’ those with legitimate concerns about immigration - and then put them in a ‘basket of deplorables’ -

they’re likely to vote against you
