SNC hosts Québec farmers

Mark Sutcli#e, keynote speaker

A group of Québec farmers crossed over into Eastern Ontario last month to check out water management projects and pro- grams that help their counterparts in the South Nation River watershed. "e South Nation Conservation Authority (SNC) hosted an 11-member delegation fromWestern Québec on a one-day visit and tour Aug. 21. "e meeting was a follow-up to a trip François St-Amour, SNC vice-chair- man and the mayor of "e Nation, made to Lachute in March. St-Amour led an SNC delegation which provided information on SNC’s water management programs. "e Québec delegation, which arrived at Finch in August, wanted to see how SNC pro- grams, including the CleanWater Program, applied to such farming concerns as planting cover crops and controlled tile drainage. Following a general information session at the SNC o%ce in Finch, the delegation visited the Christian La#èche farm for a pres- entation on controlled tile drainage. Over the past few years SNC has had federal fun- ding support for its research on controlled tile drainage to help improve crop yields. A simple and cheapmodi!cation of an existing farm!eld drainage system can allow better water retention during dry weather periods and guaranteemore excess water is released when there is too much rainfall. "e delegation toured the St-Albert Cheese Factory before going to the Marc Bercier Farm in St-Isidore to review cover crop practice there.
