Summer reading club turns the last page

A veritable horde of avid a$cionados of adventure and literary thrills, chills, and excitement, along with gu!aws galore at the hilarious hijinks of humans, animals, aliens, monsters, and more wrapped up another summer of reading. !e Jean-Marc Lalonde Arena was the venue Aug. 20 of the "nale of the 2015 TD Summer Reading Club. More than 100 TD Summer Reading Club members, along with their families, came to the arena to play games and see if they had won prizes for reading, poetry, drawing and story writing. !e evening proved very busy with eve- ryone excitedly looking for the tattoos and face painting tables, the "re department display, and all the fun games for all ages. !e participants, aged from 6 to 12 years, had spent their summer vacation enjoying the new program of TD Summer Reading Club activities at the Rockland and Bourget libraries where they took part in art and crafts, mysteries, construction, sleepovers, making fake blood, cookies and, of course, reading as many books as their enquiring minds could absorb. During the July and August TD Summer Reading Club program, the 345 registered members at the Rockland and Bourget branches of the public library read more than 262,000 pages, doubling the mem- bership and pages-read count of last year’s program. Rockland businesses, such as Potvin Construction, Walmart, TD Canada Trust Bank, Shoppers Drug Mart, Grenon’s

of the top readers and also winners for the best illustration, story writing, and poetry contests. Winning the top reader awards

were Zara Imran (age 6-7) with 11,275 pages; Emma Comeau (8-9) with 11,761 pages; and Hannah Green (10-11) with 18,463 pages.

Independent Grocers, Giant Tiger, M&M Meat Shops and Décor Surface, supported the reading club programby providing dona- tions of money, food and program equip- ment like cardboard and carpet squares and prizes. During the program, 12 high school students volunteered more than 700 hours of their time to help deliver the many fun activities and supervise the sleepovers at the library. !ese valuable volunteers received certi"cates of thanks and they intend to use the accumulated volunteers hours towards education scholarships in the future.
