GROWING GREEN FAIR PROVES TO BE GREAT SUCCESS

Participants learned how to grow a flou- rishing kitchen garden, organic pest control, conserving vegetables, foraging and how important trees are for community well-being. “A lot of events like these are in Ottawa, and outside of our community and aren’t accessible to people that live in our region,” added Howard. “We wanted to give an opportunity to people in our community to
learn more about sustainable living beyond growing their food.” Howard said organizers have sent surveys to participating vendors and community groups, and the feedback will help them determine the future of the event. “Early comments from people were very positive,” said Howard. “Vendors were happy and people who walked through the doors were happy there was a chance to learn more about gardening.” Revenues from the event are going towards the Rockland Community Garden’s food bank donation and youth programs during the growing season.

The Rockland Nationals clinched a playoff spot in the 2023-2024 CCHL postseason with two wins over the weekend. It was a rough stretch for the Nationals, who snapped their four-game losing streak with wins against the Kemptville 73’s and the Brockville Braves. The Nats opened the week with back-to- back losses on the road against the Carleton Place Canadians on Tuesday, Feb. 27, and the Ottawa Junior Senators on Wednesday, Feb. 28. Rockland returned home two days later, hosting the 73’s on Friday, March 1, and earning a 5-4 win against the visiting team. Alex Kelloway and Anthony Hall each had a goal and an assist to help the Nationals to their first victory in a week.

Micheline Marchildon Humoriste, comédienne et animatrice, Micheline Marchildon est une Franco-Manitobaine de Saint-Boniface. Depuis Hollywood, en passant par Toronto et Montréal, elle mène une longue et fructueuse carrière. Elle compte une quinzaine de saisons de télé, pour un total de plus de 300 épisodes. Comme humoriste, on l’a vue dans les émissions Le Prochain stand-up, Trait d’humour, D’un rire à l’autre, Le sens du punch, Ça fait la job, Le Hé Ho Show, TFO 24.7 ainsi que dans le gala Rire en français, produit par Juste pour rire. Comme animatrice et comédienne, elle a animé Viens voir ici! à TVA, où elle explorait la francophonie canadienne hors Québec. Elle a aussi joué dans le sitcom franco-ontarien culte Météo +, diffusée sur TFO. On peut découvrir ses 1001 voix dans des dessins animés : Canot cocasse sur Unis TV, La Brigade sur Tou.tv et Fééli tout sur TFO. Avec son spectacle solo French’er hors Québec! (F.H.Q.), elle expose sans gêne ses expériences de vie dans les communautés francophones hors Québec ou « F.H.Q. » de Toronto, de Winnipeg, de l’Ouest et de l’Acadie. Son humour physique et auto-dérisoire nous plonge dans « le funny de la francophonie ».
LeFLOFRANCO Artiste hip-hop franco-ontarien, LeFLOFRANCO propose un son rempli de hautes vibrations mariées à des textes chargés d’émotions. Il décrit son style comme étant de la « pop urbaine multicolore ». Né à Paris, LeFLOFRANCO est d’origine haïtienne et a grandi dans la région d’Ottawa-Gatineau. Il désire apporter une perspective multidimensionnelle à ce qui peut parfois être sombre. Sa musique en français transcende et captive de multiples auditoires, anglophones comme francophones, jeunes et moins jeunes. FLO croit fermement que la variété est l’ingrédient de la vie. Ainsi, l’ajout de couleurs et de nuances à ses propos fournit simplement à son public une plus large palette de sons et d’émotions. En 2019, il lance son premier album Force inhérente. Depuis, il monte sur scène d’un bout à l’autre du Canada, et même aux États-Unis. C’est en janvier 2022 que LeFLOFRANCO revient en force en faisant paraître cinq nouveaux titres dont quatre accompagnés d’un vidéoclip.

Endroits fermés ou partiellement fermés = danger!
Du 10 au 16 mars 2024, s’étend sur la toile agricole la toile de la Semaine de la santé et de la sécurité en milieu agricole. Cette période cruciale de sensibilisation est chapeautée par l’Union des producteurs agricoles (UPA), qui fait écho au thème de son colloque annuel en mettant l’accent sur la prévention dans les espaces clos. Sous la bannière évocatrice «Soyez conscients des risques avant de perdre conscience», l’UPA souhaite éclairer les travailleurs sur les dangers atmosphériques et les risques d’ensevelissement auxquels ils peuvent être confrontés lorsqu’ils évoluent dans des environnements confinés tels que les silos, les réservoirs, les trémies, les cuves, les citernes, ou encore les préfosses à lisier. Les dangers atmosphériques sont multiples et insidieux. Une ventilation inadéquate, fréquemment constatée dans les espaces clos, engendre un appauvrissement en oxygène, propice à l’évanouissement ou à l’asphyxie. De surcroît, la présence possible de gaz ou de L’utilisation de silos pour l’entreposage des grains comporte plusieurs risques pour les travailleurs et travailleuses. Pour les réduire, il importe de bien les identifier et de mettre en place des mesures efficaces pour les contrôler. En voici quelques exemples : •Les matières à écoulement libre : les grains peuvent notamment s’agglomérer et former un pont susceptible de céder sur une personne, qui se retrouvera ensevelie en quelques secondes — il sera alors très difficile de la sauver. Prévenir la détérioration des grains en éliminant les infiltrations d’eau et en suivant les recommandations liées à l’entreposage de la variété de grains, entre autres, permet de limiter les interventions requises à l’intérieur du silo.
vapeurs toxiques ou inflammables aggrave le tableau, exposant les travailleurs à des risques d’intoxication, d’incendie ou d’explosion avec seulement quelques inhalations imprudentes. Quant aux risques d’ensevelissement, ils résultent de la présence de matières solides à écoulement libre (grains, copeaux, sable, etc.) ou de liquides, pouvant entraîner des situations dramatiques de submersion ou d’ensevelissement, rendant souvent toute opération de sauvetage impossible en cas d’accident. Face à ces dangers bien réels, il est impératif d’adopter une approche préventive rigoureuse. Dans la mesure du possible, il est recommandé d’éviter les tâches dans les espaces clos, en favorisant des solutions alternatives telles que la modification des équipements pour permettre le travail depuis l’extérieur. Lorsque l’intervention en espace clos est inévitable, une planification minutieuse s’impose afin d’identifier les risques et de mettre en place des méthodes de travail
sécuritaires, notamment en assurant une surveillance constante et des procédures de secours efficaces. La prévention ne se limite pas à la mise en place de mesures techniques ; elle implique également la sensibilisation et la formation des travailleurs. L’UPA souligne l’importance d’une main-d’œuvre bien informée et préparée, rappelant que les travailleurs doivent être âgés d’au moins 18 ans pour intervenir dans de tels environnements. Dans cette optique, les bureaux régionaux de l’UPA sont encouragés à organiser des activités de sensibilisation tout au long de l’année, mettant particulièrement l’accent sur les risques liés aux espaces clos. • Les pièces en mouvement : une vis de vidange, par exemple, peut causer des blessures graves. Un bon moyen d’écarter ce risque est de recourir au cadenassage pour contrôler les énergies. •Le travail en hauteur : une chute du haut d’un silo à grains peut être lourde de conséquences. Des dispositifs antichutes et le port du harnais sont donc de mise. Vous devriez en outre envisager de troquer les échelles contre des escaliers et d’installer des garde-corps si votre personnel est souvent appelé à y monter. • Les poussières de grains : s’exposer à ces poussières peut entraîner des problèmes de santé tels que le poumon du fermier. Ainsi, un équipement de protection individuelle adéquat (gants, lunettes et masque certifié) s’avère indispensable. Misez également sur des méthodes de travail qui permettent de minimiser la quantité de poussières générée. En tout temps, veillez à respecter la réglementation en vigueur et les consignes des fabricants et à favoriser le travail depuis l’extérieur du silo. Enfin, s’il est essentiel d’y entrer, rappelez-vous qu’il est obligatoire d’identifier les risques, de former le personnel et de mettre en place des procédures d’entrée et de sauvetage en conformité avec le Règlement sur la santé et la sécurité du travail. Wollastonite: Improving Ag Productivity and Fighting Climate Change
Local farmers will be excited to learn about a recently announced business partnership that will be a win- win both for themselves and the planet. Canadian Wollastonite (CW), a mining company based a short distance north of Kingston, has teamed up with UK- based UNDO Carbon to subsidize a lime alternative for spreading on Ontario fields that will help to combat climate change.
UNDO initiative will create attractive opportunities to save money and realize important benefits for their crops. UNDO Carbon, established in 2022, is a global pioneer in the field of carbon removal which is on a mission to permanently remove one billion tons of atmospheric carbon dioxide This will be accomplished through ERW
with crushed wollastonite that can improve crop yields. In addition to its utility as a natural fertilizer, the wollastonite which is spread on farmers’ fields will make valuable environmental contributions by removing significant amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The process jointly developed by CW and UNDO Carbon makes it possible for substantial amounts of carbon to be captured quickly, with carbon dioxide molecules being flushed down through soils and waterways leading to their permanent storage for thousands of years. UNDO Carbon provides the technical expertise that is required to accurately measure and document the amount of carbon dioxide that is being captured. Wollastonite would customarily be sold to the horticultural market for $50 per ton. However, the removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through ERW creates high quality carbon removal credits which are sold on the voluntary carbon market. The revenues that flow from these sales make it possible to subsidize 100% of the cost of the wollastonite itself. To make the deal even more attractive, CW is now offering a limited time spring promotion wherein the company will pay the spreading costs for participating farmers. The only cost to farmers is the trucking from the mine site in Seeley’s Bay. As a result of the way that the CW – UNDO operating model is structured, it offers a compelling economic argument for using wollastonite as a highly effective substitute for lime. The concept has already been enthusiastically embraced by several Ontario farmers, who confirm that the value proposition involved is a powerful one that’s hard to resist. Exhaustive and rigorous testing of wollastonite has demonstrated that it is a mineral that is ideally suited to agricultural applications. The methodology that has been developed by the two companies has already been shown to demonstrate over 90% carbon efficiency. The plan is to rapidly scale up the rollout of the CW-UNDO partnership, increasing the amount of
wollastonite that will be spread on Ontario farms from 10,000 tonnes in 2023 to 100,000 tonnes by the end of 2024. If all goes according to plan, it will result in the removal of one million tonnes of carbon dioxide from Ontario fields over the next seven years. Wollastonite also has other important advantages that will directly benefit farmers. The mineral contains valuable plant nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, sulfur, and silicon, which has been proven to be particularly effective in terms of improving stress tolerance, enhancing crop quality, and fortifying plants against pests and diseases. As wollastonite breaks down, it releases vital nutrients into soil that are made available to plants and crops. Independent lab-based studies have shown that application of wollastonite to crops can increase dry mass by 177%, plant height by 59%, and dry biomass weight by 90%. By substituting wollastonite for traditional lime and expensive lime applications, farmers can save both money and eliminate the significant amounts of carbon dioxide that are released when lime is applied. The arrangement between CW and UNDO Carbon has been structured so as to make it simple and easy for farmers to take advantage of what the two companies can offer. The two companies have partnered in a three- year carbon removal demonstration project which is the largest initiative of its kind in North America. Their goal will be to show that Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) is a shovel ready, low cost, geoengineering tool that is a win for both farmers and the planet. ERW captures carbon dioxide by spreading crushed rock on the soil that starts a chemical reaction. The process begins when carbon dioxide is captured by rain and forms carbonic acid. When the acidic rain reacts with wollastonite it releases calcium, magnesium, and silicon into the soil, while storing carbon in the ground water for thousands of years The successes achieved by the Canadian demonstration project will be used to model, calibrate and scale similar ERW programs around the world. For participating farmers, the CW-
projects both in Canada and various other countries. ERW is designed to accelerate the naturally occurring process of rock weathering by crushing chemically reactive rock into fine silicate powder, thereby exposing more reactive surface area to the elements. ERW is UNDO’s permanent, rapid, and scalable carbon dioxide removal technology that has the potential to lock away up to four billion tons of carbon dioxide per year. This equates to 40% of global carbon dioxide removal targets. Canadian Wollastonite, located in Seeley’s Bay, was established to develop one of the world’s largest deposits of wollastonite, an environmentally friendly white mineral that has impressive soil enhancing and carbon dioxide sequestering properties. The new joint initiative with UNDO will provide Canadian farmers

Remote learning was offered as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, as SFRVJSFECZUIF.JOJTUSZPG&EVDBUJPOGPSBMM publicly funded school boards from 2020-21 to 2022-23. The UCDSB decided to extend remote learning options through the 2023-2024 school year to give families and students an extra year to prepare for a return to in- person learning. 8JUI GVMMUJNF SFNPUF MFBSOJOH FOEJOH at the end of the current school year, four students at the Rockland District High School (RDHS) will be impacted. RDHS supports a student population between grades seven to 12. “If students require any assistance in their learning, they can contact their principal for any type of support options, but remote learning will not be an option for students next (school) year,” she added.
The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) announced last month that it will no longer be offering remote learning as a full-time option for the 2024-2025 school year. The decision was made at the UCDSB meeting on Feb. 14. Susan Rutters, superintendent of schools, and Brian Reid, principal of digital learning with the UCDSB, presented an overview of remote learning during the meeting and noted that remote learning across the school board currently makes up less than one per cent of UCDSB enrolment. The school board also expects a decrease in remote learning participation going forward. Reid showed remote learning numbers have been declining drastically since the pandemic for both elementary and secondary schools.

RAYMOND LAFLEUR C’est avec regret que nous vous faisons part du décès de Raymond Lafleur, de Clarence Creek (Ontario), survenu le mercredi 28 février 2024, à l’âge de 93 ans. Il était l’époux de feu Bibiane (Parent), le fils de feu Albert Lafleur et de feu Lorenza (Bélanger). Il laisse dans le deuil ses enfants : Johanne (Edgar Card) de Nouvelle-Écosse, Robert (Suzanne Lalonde), Rodrigue (Carol Montgomery), Carmen (David Stone) et Guillaume (Guandaly Dumas); dix- huit petits-enfants : Sara (Darren), Leigh-Anne (Gordon), Sheldon (Sara), Leslie (Kirstie), Mathieu (Deana), Emmanuel (Nicole), Nathalie (Michael), Danielle (Stephen), Louis-Philippe, Courtney, Tashiana (Will), Tristan, Melanie (Alex), Belinda (Mathieu), Gabriel (Victoria), Dave (Katia), Sabrina (Francis), Antoine; dix- sept arrière-petits-enfants : Brandon, Jennifer, Zeff, Joy, Connell, Mikael, Rémi, Mélody, Felix, Mackenzie, Daniel, Walter, Raymond, Evelyn, Pascoe, Talia et Maisy. Il laisse également dans le deuil ses trois belles-sœurs, Marcelle (feu Eddy Lalonde), Huguette Parent s.c.o, Jeanne d’Arc (feu Jean St-Jacques), ainsi que plusieurs neveux, nièces, cousins, cousines et ami(e)s. Il fut prédécédé par son fils, Normand (Michelle Boisvenue) de Oklahoma City, sa fille, Lorraine, sa petite-fille, Anastasia; ses frères et ses sœurs : Clémence (feu Rodolphe Rochon), Laurent, Apolline, Gérard (feu Thérèse Beauchamp), Georgette (feu Conrad Parent), Françoise (feu Charles-Henri Brooks), Marcel (feu Gabrielle Tassé), Fernande (feu Edouard Lemay), Aline (feu Daniel Chabot), Philippe (feu Jeanne Bernard), Roland (feu Colombe Labelle), Huguette (feu Roger Guindon), Marie (feu Germain Parent) et des belles-sœurs et des beaux-frères : Yvette (feu Nicholas Séguin), Carmelle (feu Joseph Lalonde) et Rolande (feu Lucien Roy). La famille désire remercier l’équipe de santé familiale de Clarence- Rockland et l’équipe du Manoir de Rockland et le Dr Pelletier, les services de soutien à domicile et en milieu communautaire (LHIN). Des dons commémoratifs peuvent être faits à la Société Alzheimer . Les funérailles seront célébrées le samedi 9 mars 2024 à 11 h, en l’église Sainte- Félicité, ch. Landry, Clarence Creek (Ontario).
