wicked. He had told nothing but the truth. He had said that He was the Son of God, and for this He was to die. Lesson Story: You know the sad story of how they took Him, the precious Son of God, and hung Him on a cross. There He hung between two thieves, He who was without sin. But even in His pain, Jesus thought not of Himself, but of His ene mies, and He prayed to His Father: “For give them, for they know not what they dq.” Crowds stood by. Some laughed and mocked. “He saved others,” they shouted a “let him save himself.” His friends came and wept. How helpless they had been to save Him! How little they understood that He had allowed His enemies to take Him in order that He might die for them, that through His .sinless death their sins might be forgiven and they might stand before a just God. As the people stood there near the cross, darkness covered the earth, darkness as black as the sins that Jesus was carrying for the people, darkness so black that the curious crowd could hot see Him die. For three hour.sijj this darkness covered the earth. At last, at three o’clock in the after noon, it was over, and the Lamb of God was slain for us. And they put His body in a tomb and sealed the entrance with a large stone. Objects : An empty coconut shell, a small globe of the world, a red cardboard cross, a diamond ring, and a wedding ring. (A small globe and the rings can be se cured, as a rule, at a “5 and 10” store. If the globe cannot be found, use a piece of cardboard with the map roughly sketch ed on it. A small crown cut from yellow paper can be used instead of the rings if desired.' String the articles on a thread in the order mentioned, place them in the co conut shell, and paste the shell shut. If a coconut cannot be secured, make an imitation one with brown crepe paper.) Lesson : This is the most wonderful co conut you have ever seen, I am sure. It tells the story of “Much in Little.” Let’s open it and see what makes it so wonderful. This coconut reminds'1!me of a verse in the Bible—John 3 :16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” As I pull on this golden thread, no tice what happens. A world comes out! This reminds us of the world that God loved. As we keep pulling on the thread, we next see a cross of red. This cross sug gests to us God’s gift of His Son who shed His blood on the cross for our sins. How thankful we should be that God loved the world and gave His Son! The next thing which comes out looks like a diamond ring. Very often when a young woman believes in a young man suf ficiently to promise to marry him, he gives her a diamond ring. The Hook The precious Book I'd rather have Than all the golden gems That e'er in monarch coffers shone Or on their diadems. And were the sea one chrysolite, This earth a golden ball, And gems were all the stars of night, The Book were worth them all. Ah, no, the soul ne'er found relief In glittering hoards of wealth; Gems dazzle not the eye of grief; Gold cannot purchase health. But here's a blessed balm For every human woe, And they that seek that Book in tears, Their tears shall cease to flow. —AUTHOR UNKNOWN. This dying thief is God’s great illustra tion of what He can do by grace apart from all human works and character. Was Paul thinking of him when he wrote Ro mans 10:9? He met both conditions. Golden Text Illustration One of the most tragic of all the events of the Spanish-American War occurred during the battle of San Juan, preceding the now historic surrender of Santiago. In the charge on San Juan Hill, early in July, 1898, Lieutenant Ord, at the head of a handful of soldiers, was one of the first to reach the top of the hill. Just as he passed over the brow of San Juan, he observed a wounded Spanish soldier lying on the ground, and pointing to him, said, “Take care of that man,” meaning that no harm was to be done, and that medical aid was to be obtained as soon as possible. The Spaniard saw the motion of the officer’s hand, and evidently thinking it meant a command to his soldiers to shoot, he raised his rifle and fired. Brave and kind Lieu tenant Ord dropped dead. The wounded soldier had shot his best friend! When the men following Lieutenant Ord saw how cruelly the Spaniard had misjudged his action, they were wild with rage, literally riddled the body of the murderer with bullets, and rolled it into the trench. In wondrous contrast, our God, instead of sending legions of angels to avenge the death of “his only begotten Son,” sent the disciples with a message of love, com missioning them to begin “at Jerusalem” (Lk. 24:47), for “God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom. 5:8). lieves on Christ and accepts Him as Sav iour, that person is given the Holy Spirit. The last thing to come out of the shell is a ring which resembles a wedding ring. A wedding ring suggests a life together for two people. The Bible tells us that all who accept Christ as Saviour have eternal life. There is going to be a Marriage Sup per in heaven. All those who have accept ed Christ will attend. Doubtless there are some boys and girls here this morning who would like to have eternal life by accepting God’s gift, His Son, and thus to be made ready for the great Marriage Supper. Let us bow our heads and tell God that we thank Him that the Lord Jesus died for each one of us.
