Killer fire started by “smoking articles”, says chief FRANCIS RACINE francis.racine@eap.on.ca
“Smoking and kitchen fires are the two leading causes of fires in Ontario,” outlined Cornwall Fire Chief RichardMcCullough. “I would urge all residents to bemindful when it comes to smoking and cooking in their residence.” The investigation of the fires was conduc- ted by the Ontario Fire Marshal and Emer- gencyManagement (OFMEM), Cornwall Fire PreventionDivisionandCornwallCommunity Police Services.
A 79-year-old woman died last week after a fire swept through her apartment. Firefighters were called to the apartment at 15 Edward Street around 6:20 p.mon April 5. After extinguishing the fire, they found the victim. She was removed and treated by firefighters before paramedics at the scene. She was pronounced dead a short time later.
Le chemin Carleton, un endroit souvent tranquille du quartier Est de la ville, a subi un vrai afflux d’activité policière le 6 avril dernier, puisqu’un jeune homme de 28 ans était recherché pour un meurtre commis au 306, Carlton. Selon un communiqué du Service de police communautaire de Cornwall, les policiers se sont rendus sur les lieux aux alentours de neuf heures dumatin et ont ensuite attrapé le suspect, mais non sans avoir fait paniquer le quartier. « Un policier était dans notre cour arrière, s’est exprimée une résidente du quartier sur Facebook. Il cherchait quelqu’un ou quelque chose. » La victime, une femme âgée de 52 ans, aurait subi un traumatisme visible et était connue par le suspect. Une autopsie a été ordonnée pour déterminer la cause du décès et l’enquête sur cette affaire se poursuit par la Division des enquêtes criminelles du Service de police communautaire de Cornwall.

Residents from the third floor of the hou- sing complex were evacuated while crews battled the fire, which was contained to a single unit. A Cornwall Transit bus was brought on scene to provide temporary shel- ter for the displaced residents, andmembers of the Red Cross were also on hand to pro- vide assistance. The incident follows yet another fatal fire that occurred on April 3 in the 100 block of Sixth Street West. It too claimed the life of a 57-year-oldman. In both cases, the fires were caused by smoking articles.
Two nabbed over Easter weekend for impaired driving Two local men were apprehended by police over the Easter weekend, when it was disco- vered they were operating their vehicles while under the influence of alcohol. Andre Goulet, 56, of Cornwall, was arrested on April 3 and charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and over 80. It is alleged that, on the same day, Goulet was found to be operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol in the area of Ninth Street and Sydney Street. He was taken into custody during a traffic stop, charged accordingly and later released to appear in court on April 16. Roy Lutz, 44, of Cornwall, was arrested on April 5 and was also charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and over 80. It is alleged that, on April 5, the man was found to be operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol in the area of Second Street and Sydney Street. He was taken into custody during a traffic stop, charged accor- dingly and later released to appear in court on April 16. – Francis Racine
