Whatcom Falls Park is located just 10 minutes from downtown Bellingham and offers something for nature lovers, kids and history buffs alike. This 241- acre park features multiple waterfalls and a well-known stone bridge that was originally constructed in 1939. For visitors interested in learning about the area’s history, there is an observation area of the site where, in 1999, a pipe containing gasoline burst and spilled 200,000 gallons of gasoline into Hannah and Whatcom Creeks, destroying 1.5 miles of riparian habitat almost instantaneously. If you’re traveling with kids, Derby Pond is stalked with seasonal fish for youth ages 14 and younger. There is also a swimming hole, picnic area, and playground. And if you’re a pet lover, there is a dog training and exercise area in the park as well. Whether you’re looking to take in the history or simply want to stroll along the well-maintained trails that parallel the creek, Whatcom Falls Park has something for everyone.
