Healthy Trees, Healthy Communities

Along with planting new trees, the MCDOT Tree Maintenance Section has a role in the preservation of our public trees in the County ROW. The MCDOT proactively prunes ROW trees to ensure roadside canopies are not damaged by construction activity. The agency also ensures that county contractors install protective fencing around adjacent street trees prior to the start of construction. As a resident or business owner in Montgomery County, you can become a street tree steward by reporting threats to street trees to the MCDOT. You can also water newly planted trees in hot summer months or get your HOA involved in assisting with stump removal in your neighborhood. New trees can replace stumps more quickly when a tree-loving community wants to help.

Mature street trees in the Downtown Silver Spring redevelopment have been well-protected, although trees had to be removed for Purple Line construction.
