HAVE YOUMET YOURANNUAL INSURANCE DEDUCTIBLE?

An insurance deductible is the amount of money that you must pay before your insurance company pays for your medical services. If your deductible is met, your Physical Therapy may not cost you anything. Patients with family plans or those who have had major surgeries or have a chronic illness are especially likely to have a $0 balance remaining on their out-of-pocket expenses. This means that the cost of physical therapy could be minimal or completely covered by the patient’s insurance plan. If you are close to or have met your insurance deductible for the year, then now is the time to come in for Physical Therapy! Are you feeling aches and pains? Need to work on your core? Let us help you get a head start for 2020. Contact us today to schedule your appointment.

As we all age, our bodies experience a certain “wear and tear” on cartilage and joints. This can cause inflammation and pain, known as arthritis. According to the American Arthritis Foundation, Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, making itself apparent in people as they age. It can certainly take a toll on one’s body, resulting in achy or painful joints after exercise, after a long day on one’s feet, or even after prolonged periods of inactivity, thus causing joints to constrict. The most common areas of Osteoarthritis are found in the fingers, hips, knees, and spine. These are all joints that we use excessively, even in our daily lives. Just think - by the time you lift yourself out of bed, shower, brush your teeth, eat breakfast, and prepare to begin your day, you’ve already used these joints a multitude of times. Therefore, it isn’t surprising that pain can occur in them over time. If you believe you may be experiencing Osteoarthritis, give one of our physical therapists a call today to discuss pain relief. Why do we experience Osteoarthritis? While it is true that Osteoarthritis is most common in older folks, that is not always necessarily the case. It is possible that Osteoarthritis can present itself in younger adults, especially if they are prone to weak joints, poor dieting, or if they aren’t very active. Your cartilage works hard to protect your joints by absorbing the natural shocks that your body experiences on a daily basis. Therefore, much of your likelihood regarding

Osteoarthritis isdependentupon thephysicalandnutritional lifestyles you partake in. Joint alignment can alter and the muscles around a joint can weaken over time, causing the cartilage to shift or thin. As cartilage wears down, Osteoarthritis becomes much more common. As Osteoarthritis progresses, more symptoms can arise. The most common symptoms are: • Joint pain. • Swelling or tenderness in or around the joint(s). • Inflammation or flare-ups of pain in the joint(s) after use. • Feeling stiff after sitting or laying down for prolonged periods of time, especially when getting up in the morning. • Crepitus - also referred to as a “cracking or crunching” feeling when moving the joint(s), or the sound of bone rubbing on bone. HOW CAN PHYSICAL THERAPY HELP OSTEOARTHRITIS?

According to the American Occupational Therapy Association, 1 in 5 adults are diagnosed with arthritis annually. Physical and occupational therapy are the most common treatments for Osteoarthritis, usually helping with the relief of joint pain in just a few sessions. If you have arthritis, don’t fret - there is hope! While anti-inflammatory and pain medications will help for the time being, they are very much a short- term solution. Physical therapy can help in actually strengthening your joints and muscles once again, allowing for a much healthier and long-term pain relief solution. Occupational therapy will also help in learning to use your joints in new ways once again, allowing for the highest quality of life despite the severity of your arthritis. Our physical therapists are trained to help you with joint alignment, stability, muscle regeneration, and most importantly, pain relief. They are dedicated to helping you get back to your normal levels of mobility. Don’t settle for a life of aches and pains - physical therapy can get you back on your feet and doing the activities you used to love! If you are suffering from Osteoarthritis, give us a call today - we can get you back to living your best, most pain-free life. HEALTHY RECIPE

VEGAN SWEET POTATO QUESADILLAS

INGREDIENTS • 5 tbsp olive oil

• 2 handfuls of baby spinach • 1 cup black beans, cooked or canned • 2-3 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped

• 1 sweet potato, grated • 1 tsp smoked paprika • 1/2 tsp chili (optional) • 1/2 tsp cumin (optional)

• salt & pepper to taste • 6 gluten-free tortillas • 1 cup vegan cheese, grated

DIRECTIONS Filling: Heat 1-2 tbsp of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add grated sweet potato and roast for 30 seconds, then add spices and stir to combine. Once the pan is sizzling, add a little water, then cover the pan and reduce to low hear. Cook for 6 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add baby spinach, and cook for 2 minutes until sweet potato is tender and cooked through. Stir in beans, corn, parsley and cook for 1 minute longer until cooked through. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Quesadillas: Heat another non-stick pan with medium heat and brush with some oil. Spread 3 tbsp of the filling evenly over half of 1 tortilla, leaving a 1/2 in border. Cover filling with grated cheese and fold over the empty side of the tortilla, pressing down carefully by using a spatula, so that it sticks. Cook for 2-3 minutes, flip and cook from the other side until golden and crispy. Repeat with remaining filling and as many tortillas as needed (about 4-6, depending on the exact size). Transfer quesadillas to a cutting board, slice, and then serve.

Helped me recover from painful muscle spasms causing severe headaches! “I am absolutely thrilled with my results from going to Performance! I had gone to another physical therapist that was not able to help me just because they didn’t have the equipment to help me, not that they were not a great physical therapist facility. Josh was great and so was Kelsey and all the other therapists! Ultimately, having the K-laser and the Revitalizer machine and different exercises and manipulation techniques helped me recover from painful muscle spasms causing severe headaches! I’m pleased to say I ammedication-free and enjoying being back to normal after over 4 months of pain! As with any PTplace, you have to continue your exercises at home to maintain strength and progress. I highly recommend Performance to anyone having severe issues and have tried other places but haven’t had any improvement! Don’t give up because it doesn’t work at one place, you may need different techniques and equipment like I did!” – Christina C.

1. It reduces pain and inflammation without side effects. Laser therapy uses a process called photobiomodulation. Unlike medications, laser therapy reduces pain without undesirable side effects. It is also important to point out that patients report long-lasting pain relief. While the number of treatments required may vary depending on the acuity of the condition, many patients experience lasting relief after only a couple treatments. 2. Can be used for acute and chronic conditions. When treating acute conditions with laser therapy, it is particularly effective when it is administered as soon as possible following injury. The faster the inflammation is reduced and the healing process can begin, the better. In the case of acute injury, laser therapy helps restore the body to normal function quicker.

3. Treatments can be customized for each situation Depending on the condition, whether it is an acute swollen ankle or chronic low back pain, the therapist will set the laser up for your condition to treat the pain and inflammation along with improving cellular function to maximize the benefits. 4. Treatments Feel Good. Depending on the laser, it can create little to no sensation or it can create a gentle, soothing warmth. 5. Treatments Are Fast. With LightForce lasers, treatments are quick, usually 30 minutes depending on the size, depth, and acuteness of the condition being treated. Appointments are limited. What is Dry Needling? Dry Needling involves inserting a tiny monofilament needle in a muscle or muscles in order to release shortened bands of muscles and decrease trigger point activity. This can help resolve pain and muscle tension, and will promote healing. This is not traditional Chinese Acupuncture, but is instead a medical treatment that relies on a medical diagnosis to be effective. Who can benefit? Dry Needling is a valuable and effective treatment for musculoskeletal pain. Patients with the following symptoms may benefit from this treatment: • Muscle Strains • Tendonitis • Osteoarthritis • Bursitis • Decrease Mobility/Range of Motion • Headaches • Chronic Pain

What to expect from treatment? Most patients report being sore after the procedure. The soreness is described as muscle soreness over the area treated and into the areas of referred symptoms. Typically, the soreness lasts between a few hours and two days. Recommendations vary depending on the amount of soreness you have and on the individual response to treatment, but may include applying heat or ice over the area, gentle stretches and modifications of activities. We also recommend drinking a lot of fluids/water to prevent any excessive amounts of soreness. Physical Therapists with specialized training and skills can offer Dry Needling. For more information or if you would like to know if Dry Needling is a good treatment option for you, please call a clinic nearest you.
