Let’s Talk Trash!-news is proud to present our 2017-2018 group of high school students who will be contributing feature stories, interviews, and much more. It is an honor to be part of this creative writing program headed up by CCCHS English teacher, Rick Amburgey. As a class project, the students were provided interesting topics to review and consider as a group creative writing exercise. Over 30 interesting places around the world where no one is allowed to visit were selected. Dividing the class into three groups, the students decided on the place they were most interested. As I met all the kids, I discovered one student was from Guam. I encouraged one of the groups to conduct an interview to find out about this far off place. So, I offered instruction for feature writing as well as conducting an interview. I am overjoyed with their enthusiasm! These kids are smart, articulate, and creative thinkers. Reaching further, I discovered that there are also artistic students who were willing to go beyond writing by providing artwork in an area of their interest. Bringing their ideas and creativity to life has been a joy. Each group selected their “team name.” Opening their minds to see beyond the four walls of the classroom, we travelled to far off places like Chernobyl, Poveglia, and Guam. Enjoy these very bright and with-it kids’ contributions on the next three pages! Newsies story about Chernobyl will certainly bring a few chills up the spine; however it is a testament of how man sadly affects our environment through ignorance and carelessness. When you read the story by Envy about Poveglia, please keep in mind that many years ago health treatment for diseases was not what it is today. Our scientific advances in medicine have certainly made a huge difference in how we treat those who are afflicted. Thank goodness! The interview by Jumping Unicorns with a fellow student only goes to show how we are all one. You will also learn some interesting facts about this beautiful place, Guam.
