Poveglia is a small island located between Venice and Lido on the Venetian Lagoon in Northern Italy. The island is spread across seventeen acres and the locals believe that anyone who visits the island never returns. The island is secured by a high wall to ensure that no one enters the island anymore. Poveglia has hosted plague victims, asylum patients, barbarian invaders, hauntings, and wars. During the Black Plague, the island was used as a quarantine colony. Doctors wore bird-like masks and stuffed the beaks with herbs to keep out the plague, but it did not help. In 1776, after centuries of abandonment, the island came under the jurisdiction of the Public Health Office and became a checkpoint for all ships coming and going from the island. In 1793, the Plague made an appearance and it was turned into a quarantine colony, or ‘lazaretto’, and remained that way until 1814. After Napoleon destroyed the church on the island and converted the bell tower into a lighthouse the island was once again used as a quarantine station. In 1922, it was converted into a mental hospital, which was shut down in 1968 due to rumors of patient abuse. From 1968 to 1975, the island was home to a geriatric center and from then till now it is closed to the public.

Update, 5/15/2014: Businessman Luigi Brugnaro bought the 99-year lease for the island of Poveglia, long considered one of the most haunted places in the world. He spent around $704,000 (513,000 euros ) to purchase the lease, and said he also estimates spending around $27 million to restore the island, though he did not say for what purpose. Reportedly, he bought the island to keep it within Venetian control, rather than allow another nation to wrest it from Venice’s grasp. Luigi Brugnaro is an Independent, conservative Italian politician, entrepreneur, business executive and the current Mayor of Venice, an office he took a hold of on June 15, 201 5

Samuel based his invention off of the electric engraving device invented by Thomas Alva Edison. The tattoo gun punctures the skin 3,000 times per minute. Scientists have invented a tattoo called “Smart Tattoo.” This tattoo glows to warn diabetics
