After writing the article in last edition’s Let’s Talk Trash-news, I felt like there was something more that I could do to contribute to your local community. That being said, I decided to coordinate with Let’s Talk Trash news’ own, Debbie Keenan, to schedule a visit to Cheatham County. The idea for the trip was to speak to the CCCHS and SHS football teams and provide them a certain exposure to life lessons and experiences from the eyes of a former NFL football player and myself, an NFL Agent. So, I reached out to my long time friend and former 7- year NFL veteran, Irv Smith Sr. and the plan was set. Thursday, October 19th, Irv and I were fortunate to be able to meet with all the players from both teams individually as they finished their respective practices. The players were able to hear the story about Irv’s path to the NFL and the different obstacles he had to overcome to achieve his ultimate dream of playing professional football. Afterward, players and coaches had the opportunity to ask as many questions as they could think of. Irv spoke about lessons he had learned in life along the way, that go far outside the lines of the football field. FOOTBALL FUN FACTS • The game of football first originated around the year 476 BC in China. When it began, it was referred to as Cuju. • To date, it continues to be one of the most popular, the most watched, and the most played sport around the world. • The first games of football used a ball that was made of leather. The players had to kick the ball through a hole that was made in a piece of silk cloth. The ball was then tied to canes and hung at a height of about 9m above the ground, where the players had to kick it with their feet. • The game of football received its name, not because the ball is kicked with the foot, but because it is a sport that is played on foot. In the earlier days, the peasants would play almost all their sports on foot while those of a higher social status played their sport on horseback. As a result, the games that were played on foot were referred to as football Source: http://www.momjunction. com/articles/football-facts-for- kids_00393124/#gref

the 20th pick in the first round of the NFL draft by the New Orleans Saints. You see, it doesn’t matter if it is in sports or in any other aspect of your life. If you believe in the process of what you are doing and continuously work hard, positive results will follow. Whether it’s the teachers for your classes, the coaches for your

team, or an individual who is helping you to learn a craft, if you can just commit yourself to learn something from them every day and continuously practice what your taught, like Irv, you can be successful and achieve your dreams.

college to attend, he was told by the legendary head coach, Lou Holtz, that there was a star player in front of him and he wouldn’t play until his senior year. Keep in mind that Irv was a standout multi-sport athlete in his community of Pemberton, New Jersey and one of the best in the country. Still, he chose the academics After our visit, we can only hope that we will have made a small impact on the lives of those young men. I know that it will have an impact on ours. We are extremely thankful to everyone that made this opportunity possible, especially Coach Hatley and Coach Robison. I’m not sure if we deserve any credit or not, but in the teams’ respective games the following Friday night they played with heart, enthusiasm, and had two big wins. However, I think Irv and I ultimately got the bigger win.
