Wichtige Eckdaten zur Ausstattung des Kunstwerks
Vase with Poppies Vase with Poppies is an early indication. In autumn 1886, Van Gogh wrote to the English painter Horace Mann Livens (1862-1936), describing what he’d been working on: ‘I have made a series of colour studies in painting simply flowers, red poppies, blue corn flowers and myosotys.’ He added that he was ‘seeking oppositions of blue with orange, red and green, yellow and violet … trying to render intense colour and not a grey harmony.’ (569) In Vase with Poppies, we can sense Van Gogh’s passionate enthusiasm in rendering the vibrant red poppies and their complementary greenery. These Parisian ‘colour studies’ would be crucial for the development of his artistic style. Theo van Gogh worked in Paris at international art dealers Goupil & Cie, where Vincent had also been employed (1869– 1876) before he became an artist. Theo was thus immersed in the contemporary art world, and after Vincent joined him in the city the two brothers were of mutual help with artistic contacts. For Vincent, Paris also meant the opportunity to see how the colour theory he’d read about was put into practice by the Impressionists and what it would mean for him .
