A family with a long history in Hammond of business dealings in hardware is embar- king on a multi-million-dollar expansion project to set up shop down the road in Rockland. J. Lalonde & Fils is a venerable family name inHammond because of its long-run- ning hardware store operation, which goes under the RONA franchise. The family is flexing its business muscle now with a $5.2 million expansion project that will see a new RONA outlet under the Lalonde name operating in Rockland later this spring. The Hammond store will remain open so resi- dents there won’t have to leave their village to satisfy their own hardware needs. «Oh, yes, definitely,» said Robert Lalonde, president of J. Lalonde & Fils, about whether the Hammond facility will continue after the new Rockland premises open. «We will use the Hammond location as the head office. We’ll be operating both.» Projected opening for the Rockland outlet is early May. The new outlet, located in the SmartCentremall site off of County Road 17 on the west end of Rockland, will measure 27 000 square-feet when completed and pro- vide 25 new jobs in the community. Robert Lalonde indicated the Hammond outlet may also see an increase to its current 35-member staff as the original store becomes the new administrative centre for J. Lalonde & Fils.

Construction crews enjoy sunshine while enduring minus-20 temperatures at the site of the $5.2 million Rockland RONA project.

The Rockland RONA project is also get- ting federal financing aid with a $93,431 Federal Development Ontario grant (Fed- Dev Ontario) through the Prescott-Russell Community Development Corp. The grant

will help with the costs of training new and existing staff for the two RONA outlets and with initial promotion and marketing expenses of the new outlet for J. Lalonde & Fils.

The FedDev Ontario fund was created to assist small- andmedium-sized businesses in Ontario with expansion and upgrading projects that will make themmore compe- titive in the global market.
