County Road 17 still on the table
VACHON / DELORME Claude H. Vachon est le fils de Jean-Paul Vachon et de Yolande Cuillierrier. Au début des années 1940, nos parents se rencontrent au Camp des Pins situé sur la ferme de monsieur Frédéric Pigeon de Rockland, aujourd’hui le couvent d’Youville des Sœurs de la Charité d’Ottawa. Jean-Paul achète une maison au 13, rue St-Jacques à Rockland en 1947. Il travaille pour la Commission de transport d’Ottawa comme mécanicien puis comme chauffeur. Yolande donne naissance à huit enfants, trois filles Diane, Jeanne, Liette et cinq garçons Jean, Claude, Louis, Jérôme (décédé à la naissance) et François. Les enfants devenus adultes, Yolande retourne aux études et devient enseignante puis infirmière. Claude, le deuxième enfant de Jean-Paul et de Yolande, vit une belle jeunesse à Rockland et fréquente les écoles Sainte-Trinité et «Rockland High School». Il poursuit ses études supérieures à l’Université d’Ottawa et fait carrière dans l’enseignement aux écoles publiques d’Ottawa. Le 8 février 1969 en l’église Saint-Paul de Plantagenet, Claude épouse Isabelle Delorme, fille de Romuald Delorme et de Pauline Gratton de Wendover. Isabelle grandit sur la ferme de ses parents à Plantagenet. Elle fait ses études primaires à la «Public School n° 6», puis à «Plantagenet High School». Claude et Isabelle ont cinq beaux enfants : Nathalie (Yves Paris), Jade, Nicholas (décédé en 2012), Marie-Claude (Michel Bénac) et Jean-Philippe (Fanny-Eve Tapp). Pendant 25 ans, Claude et Isabelle demeurent à Curran où grandit leur famille.
The Wendover intersection of County Road 17 with County Road 19 can be a busy place for traffic going through Prescott- Russell between Ottawa and Montreal. The United Counties of Prescott-Russell will attempt again to convince the provincial government to take back maintenance responsibility for the local highway.

Since then, the UCPR and its mem- ber municipalities, and also Jean-Marc Lalonde, who was MPP for Glengarry- Prescott-Russell at the time, have argued that the amount of traffic, both commer- cial and non-commercial, on the road between Montreal and Ottawa, and also from Toronto to Ottawa and back, show that County Road 17 is not just a local service road but a major highway link in Eastern Ontario. The UCPR already plans to send a de- legation to the upcoming Ontario Good Roads Association (OGRA) annual confe- rence to meet with various provincial and federal government officials. Counties administration will seek to put a meeting with Ontario Transportation representa- tives on the delegation agenda.
Who should shoulder the financial cost and responsibility for County Road 17 has been an ongoing argument between the municipalities of Prescott-Russell and the provincial government ever since the pro- vince downloaded the local highway onto the counties. The United Counties of Prescott-Russell council (UCPR) accepted a resolution from Alfred-Plantagenet Township to try again to convince provincial officials that County Road 17 rates highway status and should be under the care and control of Ontario’s transportation ministry. «I think we should not relent,» said Gary Barton, mayor of Champlain Township, one of the UCPR municipalities on the county road’s route. Ils ont également un petit fils, Médéric un mois, fils de Marie-Claude et de Michel Bénac. Claude fait du travail bénévole pour la Cité Clarence-Rockland au sein du Comité consultatif en environnement et Isabelle est bénévole pour la Société environnementale de Clarence-Rockland. Les deux voyagent au Canada, aux États-Unis, en Espagne, en Italie et au Mexique.
Winter driving warning Sub-zero temperatures and snow squalls in January have prompted a winter driving reminder from police. Motorists should reduce speed because of weather and road conditions and also be more alert to potential problems while on the road. Drivers are urged not to follow other vehicles too closely as slippery road conditions require more time for braking in case of sudden stops, and poor weather conditions can also reduce the chance of seeing obstacles in time to brake at the normal posted speed limit. Drivers should keep windows, mirrors and front and read lights clear of snow and frost.They should allow more travel time on the road to reach destinations safely or cancel trips during foul weather if necessary. Finally, they should use seat belts and also have an emergency road vehicle kit, along with a small shovel, and bag of sand, in the car or truck in case of problems.
