T h e a c c o u n t o f creation in Genesis is an integral part of the Chris tian religion because salvation by grace through the redeeming atone ment of Christ is based upon a his torical fall of man. Another religion has arisen which is based upon a story of creation. 'It is so fantastic that there would be no purpose in considering it at all were it not for the fact that it already has millions of adherents and seems to be growing rapidly. It has approximate ly 30 churches in California, and numerous others around the world. It is based upon a revelation which disclosed the method of creation to a woman named Miki Nakayama. She is held in great reverence as the only mediatrix between God and man. This religion is called Tenrikyo, and it claims to be the final revela tion to man and the ultimate religion of the world. It promises material prosperity, health through miracu lous cures, and long life — 115 years, and more if desired. It is said that when people understand how we were created it will be realized that we are all brothers and there will be peace on earth. According to its doc trines, health, prosperity, and salva tion are all obtained by witnessing a divinely ordained ceremony which is a re-enactment of creation in panto mime by the gestures of ten masked persons to the accompaniment of nine musical instruments. We are told over and over that this is the true account of creation, and it is difficult to believe that in a scien tific age it has been accepted by a multitude of people. At the time when “God the Parent” decided to make human beings, the earth was covered with muddy water. He sought for ma terials suitable for this purpose, and called from different points of the compass various creatures, including a white snake, some fish, a tortoise, and a “ sea tiger.” He obtained their permission and tasted them to ascer tain for what they would be suited. For example, a flatfish was found to be suitable for lungs. When the first two human beings were completed, the woman gave birth to 900,099,999 offspring, each of them just a half inch high. They grew to the height of three inches in 99 years and then

they all died. The woman then gave birth to another group of the same number, and again each of them was just a half inch high. In 99 years they reached a height of three and a half inches, and then they all died. The process was repeated again, and in 99 years this group reached a height of four inches. At this stage of their development the mother was certain that they would reach full stature, and she died with a smile. The hus band had died previously. But these offspring all died too. So all this was for nothing. But somehow — we are not told how — another group was formed, but instead of becoming hu man they all became animals. They died also until there was left just one female monkey. She gave birth to ten human beings, each just a half inch tall. When they reached the stature of one foot and eight inches, dry land appeared. Through all the previous events and up to this time the earth was covered with muddy water. The present human population of the earth developed from the offspring of this monkey. Thus, according to both Charles Darwin* and Miki Nakaya ma, we came from a monkey ancestry. The word “ salvation” is used fre quently. It is explained thus: “When we speak of ‘salvation’ we are most likely to feel something heavenly and not earthly. But this is not true, of course. We might take it as dealing with the temporary troubles and de feats of life.” The term “ eternal sal vation” is also used, and this seems confusing in context until one realizes that this religion teaches that man has an eternal soul which goes on and on through innumerable rein carnations. The Bible says, “Other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” He is the only mediator between God and man. There is only one life, and after this the judgment. •Although we are repeatedly told that Darwin never said that we evolved from monkeys, he did say so. “ The Simidae then branched off into two great stems, the New World and Old World monkeys; and from the latter, at a remote period, Man, the wonder and glory of the Uni verse, proceeded.” Charles Darwin, in The Descent of Man, chapter 6.
