Russell Fair weekend winds up summer GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca

One of the perks of being president of the Russell & District Agricultural Society is getting to choose the subject for the harvest fair’s annual baking competition. %e bonus is also getting to be the judge who samples the entries and decides which ones deserves the championship ribbon. John Hickling, the society’s current pres- ident, declared blueberry pie as his chal- lenge choice for contestants. “Everything’s compared to Mum’s ba- king,” said Hickling, with a grin, after #- nishing a detailed and careful comparison of the entries. Russell’s Wilma Baas provided the win- ning pie, with praise from Hickling for a delicious crust packed with tasty blueberries. Her entry, along with other examples of the agricultural goodness throughout Russell Township’s rural areas and neighbouring farmlands, were on display all through the mid-September weekend at the fairgrounds. Despite the rainy weather that dampe- ned things a fair bit Saturday and Sunday, including cancelling a few exhibitions like the Sunday tractor pull because the terrain was too soft and muddy, the 157 th Annual Russell Fair still saw families make their way to the fairgrounds to take in traditional attractions like the farm produce exhibits

and the display of classic farmequipment, as well as themidway rides. Live entertainment like the popular Ottawa band, Silver Creek, and hands-on displays for the Children’s FarmEducation exhibit, proved real crowd- pleasers during the fair. Attendance results and other details of this year’s fair will be part of an evaluation
