was a child of the ‘80s. I witnessed a lot of trends come and go, and my tastes certainly changed along the way. Today, lots of young people see the ‘80s as vintage and look to this decade for

inspiration in clothing and other aspects of pop culture. But for me, and others my age, many of these now “retro” trends were just a part of our regular life.

No one in my family was into pro wrestling, so this made my quest a bit of a challenge. However, I was determined — very determined. It took some barganining with a little cash, but I convinced my babysitter to take me! I even paid for her ticket out of my allowance, and I got to see my first WWF show. As time went on, my tastes shifted along with it. In the late ‘80s, as I became a teenager, I started really getting into music, mainly hip-hop. If you were to walk into my bedroom at the time, you’d find a Public Enemy poster on the wall along with the album artwork and lyric pages.

One of my favorite parts about life in the ‘80s was playing video games. I would play just about any video game that functioned, from “Pac-Man” to “Space Invaders.” Of course, if you ever had the

chance to play a 2600, you know just how rough around the edges some of the games were. “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” is a prime example. That game helped destroy the video game industry during that era.

My affinity for video games, pro wrestling, and music provide just a small glimpse into who I was in the ‘80s. These days, when I watch a show like “Stranger Things,” I can’t help but be hit by nostalgia. For any show set during that

But then Nintendo came along with the Nintendo Entertainment System— aka the NES, which, yes, I got my hands on later in the ‘80s. The NES may be primitive by today’s standards, but back then, the difference between the Atari 2600 and the NES was night and day. As they steadily became more advanced, I got more into my games of choice, which, more often than not, were fighting games. Another fantastic aspect of life in the ‘80s for me was professional wrestling. In the ‘80s, I discovered pro wrestling and the WWF — now the WWE. I was very much

engrossed in “Hulkamania,” and there was a word for people with my same enthusiasm: “Hulkamaniacs.”

I have a lot of good memories from the ‘80s. It was a unique decade for sure. Technology began to explode around us and brought with it constant changes to the world. Regardless of the many technological advances and events in history that occurred during this decade, when I think of the ‘80s, I see my childhood. I learned a bunch during the ‘80s and had a blast along the way!

Growing up in a small town in Illinois, there weren’t many WWF events that came our way. One year, when I was about nine, I got wind of a WWF event coming to a nearby town. I was hyped out of my mind. However, I

BYTAKINGABREAKFROMYOURPHONE Enjoy Your Family Time

Setting some time aside to be with family is important, but it can be difficult when everyone is always on their cellphones. Constant cellphone use has become a global problem, and the habit is hard to break because we rely on mobile devices heavily for work, school, and keeping in contact with friends and family. Luckily, there are plenty of apps that can reduce how often you’re on your phone and minimize distractions. SIEMPO After you install Siempo on your phone, it will ask which apps are likely to distract you. Once you select them, the app will move those apps away from the home screen and place the important ones, such as the messaging, contacts, email, and calendar apps, on the first screen. You can also designate times for specific apps to be used throughout the day. STAY FOCUSED Stay Focused is like Siempo, but there are some significant differences. You can set times to access certain apps and put the most distracting ones on lock. Stay Focused also has a “strict mode” that prevents you from uninstalling it, so be sure to think carefully before activating the lockdown because you won’t have access to those specific apps until the timer runs out. “I was in a minor car accident and received a ticket for careless driving. I hadn’t had an accident in over 30 years, so I was upset that I got a ticket. I felt we were both at fault, but since I was the one who rear-ended the other guy, I was at fault. Being concerned about my insurance going up, the cost of the ticket, and having to go to traffic school, I decided to contact Matthew to see what he thought. He said he would handle it and we would plead not guilty. I was not sure how he would pull that off, as I was at fault, but Matthew’s expert lawyering was able to get my case dismissed! Thank you so much, Matthew! CLIENT SUCCESS STORY Forest In the time that Forest takes control of your device for a set time limit, the app starts growing a tree. Once the tree is fully grown, your time is up, and

it joins the other trees that were grown during other breaks. If you pick up your phone and try to access an app, Forest will send you a notification asking you if you want to kill your baby tree by giving up. Who says guilt isn’t a good motivator? BESIDES APPS Aside from using these apps, silencing your phone and putting it in another room, leaving it in your car if you’re out at dinner, or keeping it in your purse or back pocket during a social event can also reduce your screen time. Having your phone out of sight and out of reach will keep the temptation of pulling it out at bay.

Spending time with your family is crucial, and with these apps and tips, you’ll enjoy each other’s company without too many screen distractions.

Stay Safe During Summer Travel

With These 3 Security Tips

The summer travel season is here! Many of us are well into making vacation plans, so you may already have a destination in mind, if you’re not already booked. Whether you’re traveling locally, regionally, or abroad, it’s important to take a few extra steps to ensure you stay safe and secure. Being prepared can make all the difference. Here are three things to keep in mind. Share your travel plans. Before heading out, let friends and family know where you’ll be traveling. Make a copy of your complete itinerary, from airline departures and arrivals to accommodations, as well as your travel plans once

you arrive at your destination. Make copies of your passport and credit cards to give to trusted individuals back home.

Don’t be flashy. Skip bringing fancy jewelry and watches. This is especially crucial if traveling abroad. When going out, carry a wallet in your front pocket or travel belt, which can be tucked away under your clothing. There are many destinations, both domestic and international, where pickpockets are on constant patrol for marks. Wallets tucked in the back pocket and purses slung directly over the shoulder — rather than bags worn across the body — are tempting targets. Stay focused. Don’t do anything that draws attention to yourself. Whenever possible, always travel with a companion. Having an extra pair of eyes never hurts. If you encounter large crowds and it isn’t clear why they are gathered, keep your distance. Pay attention to your surroundings, keeping your head up and your eyes open. Here are a few more words of wisdom: When traveling abroad, consult the U.S. Department of State’s website for travel alerts and warnings at Travel.State. gov/content/passports/english/alertswarnings.html . It’s always important to know what is going on wherever you may be traveling to. When you’re prepared, it’s easier to stay safe, have fun, and return home with amazing memories.

Exploring the River of No Return

The Unspoiled Beauty of Central Idaho There’s more to Idaho than potatoes. Sitting square in the center of the Gem State is one of the largest contiguous areas of protected wilderness in the U.S. While the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness Area may not roll off the tongue as easy as Yellowstone or Yosemite, this 2 million-acre swath of mountains, gorges, and alpine lakes offers something for outdoor enthusiasts of all stripes. River of No What, Now? The name of the wilderness may sound a little ominous at first — who wants to travel down a river of no return? — but in truth, it’s a title from times gone by when canoes and small watercraft could travel down the Middle Fork of the Salmon River swiftly but couldn’t fight the current going back up. Today, those same rapids make the Middle Fork a wildly popular whitewater rafting destination, with plenty of local and out-of-state enthusiasts making a return journey every summer. Rafting Isn’t for Me. What Else You Got? If crashing down 300 Class III rapids isn’t your speed, the Frank Church Wilderness has plenty of other ways to enjoy the wild mountain country. There are several lodges that were grandfathered in to the wilderness area, most of which are only accessible by jet boat, light aircraft, or good old-fashioned hiking. Some, like the Middle Fork Lodge, offer five-star accommodations, located conveniently close to one of the area’s many natural hot springs. Those with the right permits will find the rivers and lakes full of fishing opportunities, and the surrounding pine forests are teeming with game.

Lodges? I Just Want to Get Away From It All. For those looking for a truly unplugged experience, backpacking to the many campsites scattered throughout the region can be an incredible journey. If you spend

a night beside the crystal-clear waters of Langer Lake, hundreds of miles away from any light

pollution, you’ll find peace, quiet, and a sky bursting with stars. If you’ve ever wanted to experience a truly

untamed part of the United States, Idaho is the hidden gem you’ve been looking for.
