EXPOSIT ION AND PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

at other times. It probably seemed strange to Paul that he should be forbidden to speak the W ord o f God in a place that was right before him, but he wisely obeyed and asked no . questions. So when the Spirit o f God makes knqwn to us the will o f God we sometimes cannot understand it, nevertheless we should obey at once. I f ' we would speak the right f word, in the right place, at the right time and in the right way, we must look to the Holy Spirit for His guidance ¿t every step, and if we thus look to Him He will give His guid ance. When the time came for Paul to speak “the W ord o f the Lord” in jj Asia, wonderful results followed (ch. 19:1, 8, 10, 26, 27). I f at this time Paul had dis obeyed the Spirit and followed his own inclination and judgment there would have been no such results. Though Paul was forbidden by the Spirit to speak the W ord in Asia, he did not conclude that he tyas to give up preaching, he simply sought some other place to preach. When the Spirit will not suffer us to speak in one place, we should go to another. The

Vs. 6-8. "Now when they had gone throughout (And they went through) Phrygia (the region of Phrygia), and (add, the region of) Galatia, and were (having been) bidden by the Holy Ghost to preach (speak) the Word of God in Asia, after they were come to (and when they were come over against) Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia; but (and) the Spirit (add, of Jesus) suffered them not. And they (omit, they) passing by Mysia, (add, they) came down to Troas.” “Asia” here does not mean our modern Asia, nor even Asia Minor, but a portion o f Asia Minor, the Roman Province of Asia. The time for Paul to speak the Word in Asia had not yet come, so the Holy Spirit said to Paul at this time, “You must not speak the W ord in Asia.” The time came later when Paul was permitted to speak in Asia. The Holy Spirit not only knows where we should speak, but at what time we should speak in that place. It is perfectly proper for us to go out and preach the Word in places at one time where it would not be proper for us to go
