Fall is here at last and the moose are on the loose along the backcountry roads. Along with deer and other wildlife. With the days growing shorter and the darkness lasting longer, motorists are ad- vised to be careful when driving either in the early morning or the early evening or at night. Reduce speed during the twilight hours and watch the roadsides for moose or deer making their way across. Most collisions involving large animals like moose often result in both the death of the animal and serious damage to smaller cars and trucks and their occupants. Police suggest reducing speed or keeping at least to the posted speed limit while driv- ing and use high beams, when possible, to help scan the roadside for shining eyes in the brush. Take note of road sections post- ed with Animal Crossing warning signs. If a deer is spotted crossing the road, stop and wait to see if other deer also follow af- ter. Deer are most often travelling in groups while a moose may be travelling alone. *+3/1%0ŏ"1* ŏ ),%#* ROCKLAND | Every child deserves to go out and play in the snow during winter. The Rockland Family Centre staff plan to make sure of that. The centre launched its Eighth Annual Snowsuit Campaign with a goal of raising $10,000 to go towards buying snowsuits for children of families in need, along with supplies of diapers and formula for families of newborns and infants who may be facing tough times this winter. “We want to help families in need so that children can enjoy a beautiful winter sea- son,” stated Brigitte Williams of Groupe Ac- tion, which coordinates the family centres in Rockland, Embrun and Hawkesbury. All three family centres are organizing snowsuit campaigns this fall in anticipation of the winter season. Last year’s campaign for the Rockland Family Centre resulted in snowsuits for 96 children along with dia- pers and formula for families in need. The first major fundraiser event of the campaign is Oct. 25 with the annual celeb- rity breakfast at Friendly’s Restaurant from 7 a.m. to noon. Part of the proceeds from every break- fast order goes to the snowsuit fund along with any and all extra cash donations. Local celebrities will be taking breakfast orders, pouring coffee, and waiting on customers at their tables. Families in need of snowsuits for their small children should contact the Rockland Family Centre, by phone to 613-446-4220, before Oct. 18. First distribution of snowsuits for families in the Clarence-Rockland area is Nov. 2. VISION@EAP.ON.CA PRESCOTT-RUSSELL
