Catholic school board partners on new app project

KEMPTVILLE | A regional school district is taking some existing Internet technology and making it better. The Catholic District School Board of East- ern Ontario (CDSBEO) is partnering with In- Touch Mobile on a new and improved app that will soon become available to district students, staff, and parents. It’s a mobile phone app available in other communities for use in school anti-bullying programs but the CDSBEO wants the system to do even more. “We’re really excited about this,” said Wil- liam J. Gartland, CDSBEO education direc- tor. “We know it will serve our students well, and also their parents.” The anti-bullying portion of the app was created in response to Ontario’s Safe Schools initiative. It allows students or their parents to make quick and anonymous re- ports of bullying incidents through a cell phone’s text setup, through a website chat service, or by phone through a toll-free number. A trained operator takes the mes- sage and responds during regular business hours. After hours an automated system records the notices and follows up with a report. The anti-bullying system creates a report of the incident within a two-minute time frame after receiving a call, and emails the report to school administration for further investigation. If the live operator feels more immediate action is needed, a phone call accompanies the email. The CDSBEO likes the anti-bullying as- pect of the app but Gartland noted that the

board believes the app could do even more for students. “Children today are totally engaged in tech,” he said. “In the real world out there, people are using apps and getting all sorts of information through their phones.” The CDSBEO and InTouch are working on expanding the app’s protocol to feature a community outreach component. This will provide information and updates of CDS- BEO programs, policies, and services, offer updates on school bussing, and also serve as a forum for school news and announce- ments, including the CDSBEO’s “random acts of kindness” promotion. “Parents, students and community mem- bers will be able to highlight acts of kind- ness and good news items,” said Gartland. Development cost for the expanded app is already covered in the Safe Schools allo- cation from the province to the CDSBEO’s 2013 budget. When finished the app will be available for free to students early next year.
