In these uncertain times, we are being asked to help find the right solutions for customers to offer the right products to their customers. As you can image most of these products are related to Personal Protection, social distancing, guidance and wayfinding. It is a bit of a minefield knowing what is the right product to offer so we have put together a layman’s guide to help you choose the right solution. In this guide, we have put some scenarios together to help you decide which products to use.
WHAT DOES THE R SLIP RATING MEAN? The below table summarises a German National Standard test method; DIN51130. This test is a shod foot test where an individual walks on a wet surface wearing cleated safety boots whilst being held by a harness. The angle of the ramp is adjusted and whilst doing so the degree at which the individual slips, generates an R-Value. You should choose the right one part system or Laminate based on the environment it will be fitted in R13 Slip Angle 6-10 deg 10-19 deg 19-27 deg 27-35 deg 35 deg Wet Slip Risk High Risk Moderate Moderate Low Risk Low Risk DIN 51130 R9 R10 R11 R12

The Pendulum CoF test is designed to replicate the motion of a slipping foot and the laminates response to that motion. The value generated is called the Pendulum Test Value (PTV). It’s a different way of testing the slip resistance; however, its values can be directly compared to the results of the Test above R-Value (Shod Foot) PTV R9 11-18 R10 18-34 R11 34-51 R12 51-70 R13 70+ Skid Resistance for Overlaminate film 3647 has been tested following the principles of BS 7976-2:2002 results are shown below. Predominantly suitable for use as a digitally printable floor and wall covering. Because of its very good grab and good opacity, it can be adhered to most smooth clean dry floors and walls which have low contamination / soiling. Application Guidelines
Pre-Installation Assessment •To get the best performance from your floor graphics, it is essential that you assess all surfaces prior to applying your graphics to them. •Graphics must be applied to clean floors in a good condition. Generally floor graphics are applied to ceramic/commercial tiles, sealed wood, and sealed concrete. The floor should be sealed and sufficiently smooth. •The floor coating (wax, varnish, paint, etc.) must be firmly attached to subfloor. Floor coatings that do not have a sufficient bond to the subfloor may start to separate from the subfloor, subsequently causing the floor graphic to lift and fail prematurely. This could also result in damage to the floor during the removal stage. •Waxed surfaces containing silicone should be avoided. •Uneven surfaces will result in premature wearing of the graphic and should also be avoided. •Due to the variability of floor paints and coatings, we recommend applying a trail piece of the floor graphic substrate to the floor, prior to full installation, to satisfy yourself the coating is sound. Note that the trial pieces you put down could damage the surface/ paint or leave residue behind after removal, so it’s recommended that you apply this to a more discreet area on the floor. •The floor must be cleaned with suitable cleaning products, and allowed sufficient time to dry, prior to installation. Printing & Artwork •Generally floor graphic media is certified for use with solvent, eco-solvent, UV curable and latex digital printers. It is always worth double checking this prior to printing though. •We would always recommend using the correct ICC profile and heater settings for your printer & print media combination. If the correct ICC profile isn’t available, find an ICC profile for a media type closest to matching the properties of the media type you are using. Excessive ink can affect the dimensional stability of the media. Allow the print media to reach room temperature prior to loading it on to the printer. Prints must be outgassed/cured in accordance to the guidelines specified by your ink/printer manufacturer. Failure to follow this may result in the media lifting at the edges and delaminating from the floor. For solvent/eco solvent prints, we recommend 24-48 hours, depending on ink cover age.
Graphics Installation
•Floor graphics should be applied by experienced fitters and/or in conjunction with these application guidelines. •Most self-adhesive floor coverings need to be applied at a temperature between 10- 25˚C, in order to get the optimal performance from the adhesive. •Ensure the surface is clean, free of dust and contamination prior to installing the graphic. •Always use a felt edge squeegee to prevent any damage to the graphic. When applying the graphic to the floor, it’s important to apply consistent pressure to your squeegee across the media, to avoid any potential stretch and alignment issues. •For smaller graphics, dry apply these, starting at the centre of the graphic, and work ing your squeegee strokes out towards the edges of the media, until the media is fully applied to the floor. Ensure all edges and corners are completely attached. •For larger applications, you may want to wet apply the graphic. (INDOOR APPLICATION ONLY. EXTERNAL APPLICATIONS MUST BE FITTED BONE DRY) Peel away the release liner from the graphic, and spray a small amount of clean water on to the adhesive. Position the graphic on to the floor as required. Squeegee out the water and any trapped air, starting at the centre of the graphic, and working your squeegee strokes out to wards the edges of the media. Ensure the media is fully applied to the floor and all edges and corners are completely attached. •For very large applications, where multiple sections are needed to make up the graphic, ensure all edges are butt joined. Do not overlap. It’s best to assume that all polyester and PVC based print media will experience shrinking over time, to a greater or lesser extent, so be mindful of this, as the butt joins will eventually separate to leave gaps in the graphic. •Where a 2 part vinyl & laminate are used, we recommend that the overlaminate overlaps the vinyl base, generally by around 15-20mm the whole way round. This is not essential, but it gives a more gradual edge thickness, reduces scuffing of the edges, and giving better overall edge adhesion. •The floor graphic should be left to cure for 24 hours prior to cleaning, waxing or polishing the floor.
Maintenance
•Waxing the floor graphic 24 hours after installation, can help seal the edges and protect the graphic from industrial floor scrubbers and cleaning chemicals. •The end user should satisfy themselves that any cleaning agents or liquids likely to come in to contact with the floor graphic after application, are suitable and not likely to contaminate the substrate or affect the bond. •Avoid dragging or driving heavy machinery such as forklifts, pallet trucks, and vehicles over the floor graphic. •Whilst some edge chipping can be expected over time, if any edges start to separate and lift from the floor, the entire graphic must be removed and/or replaced immediately to prevent this being a trip hazard. Removal •To begin removal of the floor graphic, start by peeling back one edge/corner of the graphic. Continue to peel back the remainder of the graphic using smooth and consistent force. For larger graphics, it may be easier to remove in stages. Again, start by peeling back one edge/corner of the graphic. Continue to peel the graphic back until a manageable size has been lifted. Use a knife to gently slit an edge, and as you continue to pull the graphic back, this slit should continue to tear, allowing you to remove the graphic in smaller sections. Continue to do the same for the remaining sections. •Removing the graphics may pull up the paint, varnish or wax from the floor’s surface, even when substrates with removable adhesives are used. It is up to the supplier of the graphics to test the substrate for suitability. No liability is given for damage the floor surface, as this is out of our control. •Should any adhesive residue be left behind on the floor following the removal of the graphic, this must be removed with an appropriate adhesive remover. See manufacturer’s guidelines of any such adhesive removing agent to check compatibility with the floor’s surface.
