Oscar and Jack Noble-Adams Jack Noble-Adams became the National Champion in the Intermediate class and Oscar Noble-Adams was the National Champion in the Junior class at the National Grass Karting Championships held in Timaru over Easter. Both classes were the aggregate of a run of six races. To finish first, the karter must finish all races – there is no allowance to drop a race. Oscar went into the final race first equal on points and Jack went into the last race only 1 point ahead with an engine that was tiring and slowing down. They both won their last race. Sam Davie Sam Davie (Year 13) competed in the Youth Men’s Raceboard National Category at the National Windsurfing Championships. After two days of racing and seven qualifying against the top surfers in the country, Sam was named the national champion. Informatics Olympiad Christopher Brown (Year 12) and Chris Jung (Year 11) were selected to represent New Zealand at the International Olympiad in Informatics being held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, in July and August this year. The International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) is an annual computer programming competition for secondary school students. It is the second largest Olympiad, after the International Mathematical Olympiad, in terms of the number of participating countries. The contest consists of two days of computer programming and problem- solving. To deal with problems involving very large amounts of data, it is necessary to have not only programmers, but also creative coders, who can dream up what it is that the programmers need to tell the computer to do; the hard part isn’t the programming, but the mathematics underneath it. Students at the IOI compete on an individual basis, with up to four students competing from each participating country.
