A tree-planting project to protect the Castor River

High School in the Village of Russell, and École élémentaire de la Rivière Castor in Em- brun took a break from their classes onMay 14 and spent their time digging holes and planting about a thousand seedlings along the banks of the Castor River and other sites nearby. The eager and enthusiastic young conservationists worked under the guidance and direction of Phil Duncan, a technician with the water monitoring department of the
South Nation Conservation Agency (SNC). The SNC is one of the sponsors of the project through its own community tree- planting program. Ann Jackson, an STA teacher, and Joyce Chartrand, a teacher at École élémentaire de la Rivière Castor, are this year’s project coordinators for the student treeplanters. Township councillors Cindy Saucier and André Brisson also took an active role in the project, getting their hands dirty planting seedlings alongside the students. “The SNC project is very important,” said Chartrand, “because it concerns the protec- tion and health of the rivers and stream- banks.” The 1000 seedlings planted this year along the banks of the Castor River in both villages of Russell and Embrun add to the 5000 seed- lings already planted earlier this year along the river through the SNC program. After a hard day of treeplanting, the students and adults enjoyed a lunch provided by le Club Richelieu Embrun.
