LOBBY DAY

CWU students are heading to Olympia for Cats at the Capitol, a completely free, two-day Lobby Day experience that brings Wildcats directly into the heart of the Washington State Capitol. ASCWU Office of Governmental Affairs invites you to join! Students get an inside look at how state government works, hear their peers testify in committee meetings, and engage with legislators as constituents of their district. As a Wildcat, you can share your personal stories, represent the entire student body and voice your support for the ASCWU Legislative Agenda. The overall goal is to make higher education in Washington more affordable, accessible and student-centered at both the state and federal levels. It’s worthy to note that in 2025, Cats at the Capital successfully helped stop the state legislature from cutting the Washington College Grant, protecting critical funding for nearly half of our student population.

Students saw firsthand the real impact of using their voices. Before the trip, all registered participants will be invited to a series of preparation meetings and training sessions designed to help you feel confident and ready to engage at the Capitol. In collaboration with the Washington Student Association, Cats at the Capitol empowers students to step into leadership and make meaningful changes for higher education across Washington. Students can visit wastudent.org for the finalized WSA Legislative Agenda. Watch for updates from ASCWU’s Governmental Affairs. Whether it’s your first time in Olympia or you’ve been involved before, this event offers a opportunities to leave a lasting impact. Your voice matters.

Breaking Barriers, Changing the Game From playing semi-pro football to making NFL history, Jennifer King didn’t just break the glass ceiling, she shattered it. As the first Black woman to hold a coaching position in the NFL, she stands as an inspiring role model for young women and people of color.

Jennifer’s journey from her hometown in North Carolina to the NFL sidelines is one of perseverance and female empowerment.

6

After earning her bachelor’s degree in sports management at Guilford College, she began coaching women’s basketball at Greensboro and Johnson & Wales University. When she wasn’t working, Jennifer played semi-pro for various teams in the Women’s Football Alliance. A powerhouse on the field, she played as a quarterback, wide receiver, and safety, earning her the All-American title on seven occasions and two National Championships over her thirteen-year career. No big deal at all, (except it definitely is). Turning Ambition into NFL History After accomplishing so much in her own athletics, Jennifer decided to switch gears in 2017 to pursue a full-time coaching position in football. That year, she attended the annual NFL Women in Football Forum, where her expertise quickly landed her an internship with the Carolina Panthers, working with the wide receivers and running backs. Jennifer thrived, and quickly climbed the coaching ranks. By February of 2020 she was an interning Offensive Assistant coach for the Washington Commanders.

The following season she was promoted to Assistant Running Back coach, making her the first Black woman ever to hold a coaching position in the NFL. Back to Her Roots, Forward to the Future Jennifer worked for five seasons in the NFL before taking her playbook back to North Carolina, this time as an Offensive Analyst at North Carolina Central University. She continues to champion diversity and representation in sports, inspiring the next generation of athletes and leaders. Don’t miss your chance to hear from Jennifer King live February 5 in the SURC Ballroom! Come prepared to be moved, motivated, and maybe even ready to chase

your own big goals. February 5 6:30 p.m. SURC Ballroom

Year of the ‘Fire Horse’ Invite good fortune and prosperity to your year ahead by attending the

Yin is often associated with qualities such as receptivity, calmness, and depth, while Yang is linked to clarity, dynamism, and expansiveness. Additionally, each year is associated with one of the five elements that recur in a ten-year cycle, affecting the predetermined characteristics of each animal. The horse falls into the Yang category, and is seen as confident, agreeable, and responsible. The fire element intensifies the horse’s natural traits, producing a fierce symbol of passion, strength, and unyielding perseverance. As the first new moon approaches, the Fire Horse foretells a year of transformation, renewal, and clarity.

Korean Culture Club’s Lunar New Year Celebration! Enjoy delicious food and exchange good wishes as we bid farewell to the winter season and welcome the year of the Fire Horse. Following the lunisolar calendar, Lunar New Year marks the arrival of spring and the beginning of a new cycle. Though it is most widely known in East and Southeast Asia, the holiday is not exclusive to these regions. This year, students have worked especially hard to make the celebration more engaging, inclusive, and welcoming for everyone. Rooted in ancient Chinese mythology, each new year is coupled with one of twelve zodiac signs, which consist of animals divided into two categories; Yin and Yang.

Lady Wellington’s Wildcat Papers

Dearest Readers, The social season is abuzz with a flurry of schemes and intrigue, surpassing even the wildest imaginings of our most gregarious students. The grand Snow Ball is perhaps the most anticipated event of all. A night of regency glory and dazzling debuts, it is a highly sought-after invitation indeed. For every young socialite at CWU knows, if anyone can throw a fabulous party - it’s Campus Activities. The jewels, the gowns, the drama - one could hardly ask for a more splendid spectacle. Convene in the glittering SURC Ballroom on February 20 at 7pm to dance the night away to live classical music and rendezvous with fellow distinguished guests. Sip ambrosial mocktails and socialize, but keep your secrets close, curiosities piqued, and a watchful eye on our beloved Queen. For on this night, the answer to our most urgent of questions shall finally be revealed: which darling debutante will be named our Pearl of the season?

Yours Truly, Lady Wellington

Leadership Conference Power of You Every leader has a story. It is not just about the moments when things go right, but about the times when everything seems to fall apart, yet you keep going anyway. It’s what turns obstacles into opportunities and setbacks into setups for success. Let’s be real — college life can be a lot. Between classes, work, group projects and trying to figure out what’s next, it’s easy to feel stretched thin. But here’s the thing: leadership isn’t about having everything perfectly balanced. It’s about how you rise when things get messy. That’s resilience. This winter quarter, SLICE (Student Leadership, Involvement, and Community Engagement) is excited to present, Power of You: Leading with Resilience, a leadership conference created to help you build the mindset and skills to thrive in any situation.

14

I can be changed by what happens to me. But I refuse to be reduced by it. ” MAYA ANGELOU “

Get ready for a day full of inspiration, connection and growth. You’ll hear from incredible speakers and dive into sessions that help strengthen your problem-solving skills, make smart decisions under pressure and lead with emotional intelligence. You’ll explore what resilience looks like in action – not as a buzzword, but as a mindset that can change how you lead and live. But this conference isn’t just about learning. It’s about community. You’ll meet other students who care about making an impact and walk away with new ideas and fresh motivation. Plus, there’s free lunch and swag giveaways! Resilience isn’t about bouncing back; it’s about bouncing forward. It’s about choosing to grow, even when things get tough, and realizing that leadership starts with you. So, mark your calendar, grab your friends and get ready to tap into the Power of You. Follow @cwuslice for announcements Registration opens January 16
