Your V oice

Sharing your story has the power to change the lives of your classmates. It can echo through generations by simply standing up for our community. Join the Political Action Committee for Students (PACs), participate in Lobby Day to tell your story, and create real change on campus.

Lobby Day is a yearly event in which students from different campuses visit our capitol in Olympia to testify in front of Washington State lawmakers. Last fall, student representatives from colleges and universities across the state met to discuss priorities for Lobby Day. Fifteen campuses settled on 56 proposals to present at their legislative sessions. CWU’s priorities include helping undocumented students, providing basic housing needs, expanding childcare centers, and finalizing a bill allowing students to unionize. LOBBY DAY

MAKE REAL CHANGE

PACs is a student group whose goal is to advocate for change concerning issues in our communities. It

opens the opportunity for students to receive training and speak directly to Washington State legislators. YOUR story and YOUR voice can make an impact simply by using the power of the First Amendment.

PACs is a strong resume builder (especially if the bill gets passed) and can be a place to strengthen character and confidence. There’s no limit to the number of students that can join PACs. The committee meets weekly to discuss lobbying efforts and teach/prepare students on how to lobby.

4

Members of PACs have the opportunity to testify virtually, in writing, or in- person to advocate for these (and more) bills. Thus, students can participate in the democratic process in a way that can truly make a difference. There are other opportunities to support Wildcats' lobbying efforts without committing to joining PACs. Many proposals need immediate student signatures to show school-wide support when lobbying lawmakers. You can also follow ASCWU Governmental Affairs on Instagram (@ascuwgovaffairs), to stay up to date about forms that need signatures to help advocate for these important issues. MORE WAYS TO GET INVOLVED Participating in lobby day as a part of PACs helps students exercise their right to freedom of speech with a support system of like-minded students across the state. It is a great networking opportunity that can extend from professional to personal growth. Share student issues with lawmakers and make a change that might happen quicker than you expect. Just two years ago students successfully helped CWU secure $6 million to build a multicultural center. The construction is projected to finish in 2026.

SHAQUEM YOUR BEST NEVER COMES EASY Shaquem Griffin, our Black History Month speaker, is a former NFL linebacker for the Seattle Seahawks and has overcome many challenges to achieve greatness, on the football field, and off. Born in St. Petersburg, Florida, Shaquem grew into an impressive athlete alongside his twin brother, Shaquill. At the age of 4, however, as a side effect of amniotic band syndrome, Shaquem’s left hand was amputated. Shaquem, however, was not limited by his disability. After a successful high school football career, he was offered a scholarship to the University of Central Florida (UCF) with his brother. After being taken under the wing of UCF coach Scott Frost, Shaquem flourished, earning many accolades his junior and senior years. Shaquem made his presence known at the 2018 NFL scouting combine. He accomplished 20 bench press reps and a 4.38 second 40-yard dash, the fastest of any linebacker at the combine since 2003. Weights were lifted off of Shaquem’s shoulders, both literally and figuratively, and his years of hard work paid off. After breaking records in the pre-draft season, Shaquem was drafted onto the Seattle Seahawks in 2018. He quickly rose to fame as the first NFL player with one hand. Griffin gave five years to the NFL, and now works as a consultant for the NFL Legends community. His work includes helping former NFL players work through the resources and benefits that come with retirement. To our benefit, Shaquem also shares his story with colleges, companies, and to young footballers. He’ll be here on February 13 in the SURC Ballroom to share life lessons and how he made his mark on the industry. Griffin

Can Be Anywhere

Story by Mercer Akeson Design by Jordan Tschabold

Dracula, A Feminist Revenge Fantasy, Really, will be Central Theatre Ensemble’s winter production. While Dracula is the name which will likely draw crowds in, it’s the women who have gained the emphasis in this tale. From the gender-bent Doctor Van Helsing and Renfield, to mortals Mina Harker and Lucy Westenra, to female vampires, the women effectively hold a two-thirds majority of the cast. The play also departs from the source material in that this Dracula is not designed to be outright scary or imposing. It asks the audience to wonder: what does the word “monster” truly mean? Can we see monster traits throughout the characters, and not just those who have been identified as such? Bram Stoker’s Dracula has been a staple in classic literature and has served as inspiration for countless adaptations in media. Throughout the generations since its publication, audiences and creatives alike have drawn themes from Dracula, good and bad. a Feminist Revenge Fantasy, Really

Dracula: Vampire. Blood-seeker. Immortal. These are the depictions of the character which we see most often. These traits paint the picture of a greedy, no-good monster. Less discussed, however, is the role women play in the story.

14

RED FLAGS AND FANGS Today, it’s normal to identify red and green flags when seeking out relationships. In 2025, we value partners and friends of the highest quality! Red flags can be anything from subjects you disagree on, to harmful behaviors that may affect your physical, emotional, or mental health. Put your flag-identification skills to the test at Red Flags and Fangs. There, you can sink your teeth into the movie Twilight with your adult eyes. While watching the movie, you can raise red and green flags to call out bad behaviors. Edward and Jacob may have seemed harmless when you were younger, but knowing what you know now…yikes. Oh! I forgot to mention: to show your support for stalking awareness month, wear sparkles. While stalking can be a debilitating situation, sparkles represent that victims should never feel the need to dull their sparkle. You won’t want to miss this interactive movie night for a great cause, hosted by Campus Activities and PATH. The start of the new year also marks the beginning of stalking awareness month. This January, show your support for victims of stalking and be aware of the warning signs. WHAT IS STALKING AWARENESS MONTH RESOURCES If you or someone you know is currently a victim of stalking, connect with the following resources on campus: Office of Civil Rights Compliance: 509-963-2050 • crc@cwu.edu PATH (SURC 256) 509-963-3213 • PATH@cwu.edu Call 911 if you are in immediate danger.

In comparing culture from the 19th century and the 21st century, there has been great progress in women’s voices being uplifted. In the original Dracula, women were put on the back burner in terms of solving the mysteries surrounding vampires. Thankfully, in the feminist revenge fantasy, the women seek revenge for their silencing. The result is bold, confident, and not always ladylike characters who accomplish what men couldn’t before: the art of listening.
