BUILT TO LAST
With a long and impressive career and a determination to rival racing legends, Zipping had endurance and resilience. The 2010 Turnbull Stakes winner turned the ripe old age of 20 on 24 September 2021, celebrating in comfort and style at his home, Living Legends. It has been said that Lloyd’s Williams’ best-loved horse is no promising yearling, Melbourne Cup winner or celebrated sire, but a veteran named Zipping. “I love him, he’s just one of those special horses,” said Lloyd in the past. “He’s very brave and has been such a good horse for me ... he was the first horse to win the Australian Cup second-up from a spell.” Williams bought Zipping as a yearling for $200,000 specifically for the Danehill/Grand Lodge cross in his immediate pedigree. As far as Williams was concerned, this prized combination had the potential to produce a high-quality stayer. “His dam, Social Scene, was an imported Grand Lodge mare and I thought that to be an important aspect of his pedigree at the time,” he said. After beginning his career with a win at the Gold Coast on the last day of his two-year-old season, Zipping ran a promising third at Eagle Farm before spending a year on the sidelines He returned to work as a four-year-old and had six straight wins, including the Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes on Melbourne Cup Day in 2005. He ran a game fourth in the 2006 Melbourne Cup – a race he would contest on four occasions, finishing fourth again in 2007 before an unlucky ninth in 2008 and a fourth in 2009. “People forget his Melbourne Cup record,” Williams said.
Zipping also ran in the Cox Plate four times, finishing second in 2008 and 2010 and third in 2009. He also won four Sandown Classics between 2007 and 2010, the traditional last race of the spring carnival, which was renamed the Zipping Classic in his honour. It was a truly remarkable feat for an ageing galloper. His fifth, and most successful attempt to win the Turnbull Stakes in 2010 was one to remember, as he was a nine-year-old veteran by then. Williams quipped at the time: “You wouldn’t know he was nine. You would reckon he was four.” After his retirement in 2011, Williams rehomed Zipping at Living Legends, where he was joined in a paddock with his former stablemate and fellow Turnbull Stakes winner (2009), Efficient. Efficient is of course the gallant grey who won the 2006 Victoria Derby and the 2007 Melbourne Cup (the last horse to achieve this feat was Phar Lap with a VRC Derby win in 1929 and Melbourne Cup in 1930). Still happily residing at Living Legends, ‘Zip’ enjoys a good scratch and hanging out with his paddock mates, especially Efficient (who also celebrated a birthday recently, turning 18 in August). Affectionately they are known as 'Fish and Zip'.

“I’ve always strongly believed that everything happens for a reason. At first, I couldn’t see any reason for what happened to me but now I’ve realised that it’s so I can go to the Paralympic Games in Rio in 2016” said Emma Booth at a Fundraising Ball in her honour in 2013, just months after a near-fatal car crash. Emma was returning from an equestrian competition in Australia when the road accident that caused multiple life-threatening injuries also left her unable to walk. But just seven months later, she made her international debut in 2014 at the CPEID3* at Hartpury, UK, where she finished in the top 10 and, as the highest scoring Australian, was named as a reserve rider for the 2014 FEI World Equestrian Games in France. In 2016, she achieved the goal she had set herself so soon after the terrible accident - competing at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games with her horse Zidane. Now 30 years old, Emma has just returned to Australia after competing at her second Paralympic Games at Tokyo 2020 where she once again took fifth place in the Freestyle competition. Emma and her horse Zidane finished in eighth place in the individual competition on the first night to qualify for the Freestyle, as well as completing a solid performance to score 68% on the second night despite a few little mishaps, to contribute as part of the Australian team which finished in 13th place. Thanks to her treasured horse Zidane, she also became the first Paralympian to represent Australia twice on the same horse, but it is now time for Zidane to hang up his competition boots and enjoy a well-deserved rest after many years of a great partnership. “It’s time for him to enjoy trail rides, going to the beach and some fun stuff” says Emma of the 19-year-old Danish bred warmblood who has been her partner on this journey for the past six years. After travelling overseas to try and find the right horse with no success, it turned out that the perfect match, Zidane, was just ten EMMA BOOTH – LOOKING AHEAD TO PARIS 2024 BY DEBBIE HIGGS
minutes down the road from Emma’s home in Victoria. And, even though he had no experience as a para-dressage horse, the pair immediately clicked when Emma first tried him in late 2015, just weeks before their first qualifying competition for Rio. “I instantly knew he was the one we’d been looking for” says Emma “He is a very sensitive clever horse that was trained to Prix St George level, and it didn’t take much for him to figure out what I was asking. Almost instantly during that first ride he just ‘got it’.” Like all good riders Emma uses her core control and shifting of weight in the saddle as aids to direct her horse but Zidane has to understand her commandswithout traditional leg aids. Awhip held in each hand helps to compensate for the lack of Emma’s leg aids and voice commands are also an integral part of their communication. “The voice commands are pretty much clicking noises that many horse riders and trainers use anyway, so he immediately understood that as a forward aid. From there we made up a system that worked well for us.” The formula was instantly a winning one as Emma and Zidane broke the Freestyle record in Australia at their first competition and went on to be consistent performers. Emma was confident of another good result heading into Tokyo 2020 but the postponement to 2021 proved to be a big challenge.

FEATURE STORY
“We had to do all of our qualifying events again which is taxing, not just for Zidane as an older horse but also mentally quite difficult to deal with as well. It was a very uncertain time, not knowing if Tokyo would even go ahead but still campaigning towards it, so it was a huge relief once we were actually there.” Like their Olympic equine counterparts, the para-equestrian horses are usually well-seasoned travellers but there is plenty to consider to ensure their welfare during transport and in their new competition environment. “There is an awful lot to organise behind the scenes” says Emma “Logistically there is a lot to manage for any equestrian sport at this level - the horse’s gear, their feed, their supplements and ensuring you know the rules and regulations. And then of course, for the para-athletes there are other things to be taken into consideration such as medical requirements, the role of carers and assisting staff - it’s a huge undertaking.” “A lot of people probably don’t realise the level of care that our horses receive; keeping them fit and healthy is a big part of our everyday job and this is particularly important in the lead up to a major competition. During Pre-Export Quarantine just prior to Tokyo our horses were trotted up every day in front of the team vet and of course flying can be taxing for them, so we were careful to monitor everything before and afterwards. On top of that, there was the climate in Tokyo and adjusting to a new venue. So, it’s one thing to be selected to compete at the Paralympics but another to make sure that you keep your horse sound, healthy and mentally and physically ready to put in the best performance they can in a completely new environment.” Zidane handled the climatic conditions in Tokyo as well as Emma had expected. “He is more of a cool weather horse, but we were prepared for that and careful about managing his training sessions. The biggest problem we found was that he didn’t particularly like working under lights, which we had never done before in a competition environment, and this made him a little tense at times. So that was something we just had to manage the best we could, given the situation.”
“YOU COME OUT OF A PARALYMPIC GAMES ON SUCH A HIGH AND KNOWING THAT THE NEXT ONE IS ONLY THREE YEARS AWAY IS VERY NICE
Despite that, they produced a Freestyle score of 73.807% for fifth place, less than3%offapodiumfinish. “To finish fifth in the Freestyle at Tokyo was awesome,” says Emma, “I really don’t think we could have done any better in that grade and that field. There were some extremely competitive combinations, and it was a big ask for an older horse but Zidane really held his own.”
All smiles for Emma as she and Zidane leave the Tokyo arena for the last time. Image: Getty
“It was an incredibly emotional night, knowing that it was his last ride on the world stage and after such a long lead up to the Games. I came out of the arena after the Freestyle test and my coach, who is not one prone to crying, was in tears; it was a very moving moment and such a lovely way to end our career together.” With the delay of Tokyo 2020, the next major Para Dressage Championship is now fast approaching with the World Equestrian Games (WEG) in 2022 and Emma is hoping to have another horse qualified to compete. “I have a lovely Off The Track thoroughbred – Pakaya Prince – and it will be exciting to see how far he can go as a Para-dressage horse, but for the coming major championships I need to add another top level campaigner,” she says. There is a possibility of campaigning towardsWEG from Europe as that may be where the next horse is found but there is much to consider. “It is exciting - you come out of a Paralympic Games on such a high and knowing that the next one is only three years away is very nice!”

SHE’S A PERFECT 10
Winx was the mare that truly stopped a nation, time and time again. Recently celebrating her tenth birthday, we take a look back at where the champion came from, and her journey now. IWinx’s future dominance was unimaginable during her early career, where the mare was highly promising but by no means exceptional. After winning her first three starts, Winx finished second twice in 2014 in Randwick features the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes, then the Group 1 Flight Stakes, where she was soundly conquered on both occasions by the John Thompson trained First Seal. Winx’s next five starts would yield victory in the Phar Lap Stakes (G2) plus three unplaced runs, plus a second in the Group 1 ATC Australian Oaks (2400m) before she was given a freshen up. This is when the penny dropped, with Winx returning midway through 2015 to take out the Sunshine Coast Guineas to kick off her winning streak. One of Winx’s owners Debbie Kepitis considers the barnstorming last-to-first victory the moment she knew the horse “had something special”. Watching Winx’s heroics on the racetrack always triggered a rollercoaster of emotions, as Kepitis commented at the height of Winx’s career. “It’s quite tense. It’s quite stressful. But none of that makes a difference on race day with her. She just goes out and does the job that she knows and loves and does so well.” Kepitis admits momentarily thinking Winx would get beaten several times, especially in the 2018 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington when caught behind a wall of horses, but then marvelling at her uncanny ability to find extra gears and prevail. “In the Turnbull when she was caught behind everything it was like, ‘Oh my gosh, this is going to be it [the time she loses] we better just think about this and just watch it. It’s fine, it doesn’t matter, she has done her job and we’re just pleased that she’s alright.’ And then she just steps out and comes home,” said Kepitis. It’s a feeling fellow part-owner Peter Tighe became familiar with while watching his mare grow into a superstar. “We look back very fondly
on what she’s done and the achievements she’s made but the most recent achievement (four Cox Plates) probably hasn’t sunk in yet,” Tighe said, a month after the milestone. “She seems to be able to defy the odds and keep winning. We have a great build-up before each race, a spectrum of feelings and things like that, but after the race you can sort of look at it and go, ‘I don’t know what we were all worried about’ because she just goes and does what she likes doing.” Often legends such asWinx can be seen as almost mythical creatures, superstars that simply do the job on the track. Her owners shared insight about her however away from the racetrack, which paints a picture of an “independent soul”. Kepitis described her as liking to “go about her business”. “In the early days she didn’t want to be brushed and she just pushed [strappers] Umut Odemislioglu and Candice Persijn off, but she was never nasty about it. She is a really happy and content horse who doesn’t want a lot of affection, doesn’t want a lot of cuddles or pats or anything like that, but if she’s in the mood for it, she’ll let you nuzzle up next to her and that’s a beautiful feeling.” Tighe agreed. “You wouldn’t say she’s a playful type of horse. She’s a very sensible woman who knows what she likes, and she does what she likes, so she looks after herself very well and knows what’s going on around her,” he said.

Now, ten-year-old Winx is comfortably residing in the Hunter Valley. Almost a year since the tragic loss of her first foal during pregnancy, theWinx Ownership Group has announced that she will be visiting sire Pierro (sired by Lonhro, and five-time Group 1 winner) for this year’s 2021 breeding season. “Winx has been given a full year to recover from her ordeal and we are pleased to report that the mare has returned in great condition. She has been enjoying life on the farm with some friends while she is preparing to go back to the breeding barn this Spring,” the statement read. Winx’s first foal will inevitably be one of the most sought-after yearlings in the country, and the racing world will be waiting with anticipation and excitement for what might be the next great champion. WINX AND THE TURNBULL STAKES Although Winx was trained in Sydney by Chris Waller, it seemed to be a mission to add a Group 1 victory at Flemington to round out her CV. Not that anyone needed convincing that she was a champion, it appeared important to the stable to win at Flemington as she reached the peak of her career. In the Group 1 2017 TAB Turnbull Stakes, it would take all the star qualities of a champion and the adept skills of acclaimed rider Hugh Bowman to get the mare across the line. While punters were having heart palpitations 200 metres from home, Bowman knew the horse underneath him and when he put his foot to the floor, it was over in a blink. Winx would return one year later and repeat the performance in the same race, but on this day in 2017 it truly was a remarkable effort and one that adds her to a list of champion gallopers to win at Flemington. 25 GROUP 1 VICTORIES Winx’s 25 Group 1 wins consist of four Cox Plates (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018), four Chipping Norton Stakes (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019), four George Ryder Stakes (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019), three Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2017, 2018, 2019), three George Main Stakes (2016, 2017, 2018) and two Turnbull Stakes (2017, 2018), plus a Doncaster Mile (2016), Caulfield Stakes (2016), Epsom Handicap (2015), Winx Stakes (2018) and Queensland Oaks (2015).
