Russell Council wants back on the Web GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca

and in person. But council wants to get back to its streaming video presence on the Internet soon. Last su mm er council approved and bud- geted for live webcasts of both the co m - m ittee of the whole and regular m onthl y council sessions. Response to the live online evening council sessions has proven posi- tive with hundreds of hits recorded as resi-

dents tuned in on their ho m e co m puters to watch and listen to m a y or and councillors deal with both the da y -to-da y concerns of the m unicipalit y and debate on issues of special interest. The local contractor who provided the webcast service is no longer available as of this past Jul y . August council sessions went on as scheduled but without a presence on the Internet. Council has directed ad m inistration to find either a new contractor to provide webcast coverage of township m eetings or research other m eans to allow the m unici-

palit y to provide its own live webcast ser- vice to residents. The township will appl y to the Eastern Ontario Develop m ent Progra m (EODP) for financial help in purchasing the necessar y equip m ent if the m unicipalit y chooses to set up its own council webcast progra m .

EMBRUN | Anyone wanting to watch township council members in action for the past few weeks has had to drive down to the municipal office and see them live

This house on Forced Road near Vars was the scene of a serious fire the morning of Tuesday, August 21. Fortunately, no one was injured. City of Ottawa firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the house. A barn stands about 50 metres away. The own- er said he felt they had been very fortunate that, although the old house sustained major damage, no people or livestock were hurt. That section of Forced Road was closed for about half the day. THE EMERALD ASH BORER (EAB) is killing ash trees throughout Ontario. Help protect our trees! EAB has now been confirmed in Ottawa–Gatineau and the United Counties of Leeds–Grenville and Prescott–Russell.

This destructive insect spreads to new areas when infested wood is moved. By federal Ministerial Order, anyone moving ash tree materials or firewood out of the Ottawa–Gatineau and Leeds–Grenville and Prescott–Russell regulated area without written permission from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency may be fined or prosecuted.
