ON A BELIZEAN MISSION TRIP

NOVEMBER 2019

Dental Work for All

For this month’s edition, I want to take the time to talk about the mission trip my wife and several team members volunteered for in August. A nonprofit called International Servants organized this mission trip. Their goal is to provide a number of health care services for Belizeans of any age suffering from poverty. International Servants has several programs, including a children’s ministry, a medical mission, the Feed-A-Child program, the Save-A-Child’s Life program, their Belize mission trips, and a dental mission. They also have a network of 54 Belizean churches they operate from. My team and I went to Belize to provide much-needed dental work. Most of the work we did there was pulling the teeth of hundreds of folks suffering from severely damaged or eroding teeth. We were only one part of the medical team that volunteered on this particular mission; many other dental teams, as well as medical teams, focused on treating and seeing as many people as they could. Each team of volunteers brings their own supplies and equipment to set up in the medical building. We have to use our own generators sometimes because

rewarding to help as many people as we did,” says Jackie Goracke, our marketing and treatment coordinator and one of my Auburn Dental Center team members on the mission. “The whole trip is a little hard to explain, though; no matter how much you think you’re prepared for it, something always surprises you. Every morning when we pulled up to the church, there would be hundreds and hundreds of people all lined up. Some of them had gone to the church service the Sunday before we arrived and learned that we’d be offering treatments from the church. Other people had heard about us and walked a couple of days from their village just to get to where we were and be treated.” Every year, International Servants returns to Belize to offer their services. Both my team and I were happy to volunteer our time this year. We’ve gone for a few years in a row now, and we’re hoping to go back again next year to help even more people. If you want to learn more about the mission or want to help, I encourage you to visit their website at iServants.com. -Dr. Steven Schulte

With These Gratitude-Themed Games Thanksgiving is an excellent time to teach children about gratefulness. By planning some fun, gratitude-themed games, you can impart a valuable lesson and spend some quality family time together. Get your kids in the holiday spirit by adding a Thanksgiving twist to these classic games. PICTIONARY Want to bring out your kids’ creative sides? Pictionary is the perfect way to encourage artistic expression and grateful thinking. Try adding a rule where players have to draw something they’re grateful for. This will get your kids thinking beyond turkey and stuffing and give them an imaginative way to express their gratitude. Plus, who doesn’t love a good art contest? GUESS WHO? To play gratitude-themed Guess Who?, have each participant write down their name and something they’re thankful for on a slip of paper and put it in a bowl. Then, at the dinner table, have each person draw a random slip and read what it says without saying the name while everyone else tries to guess who wrote it. While Pictionary may get your kids talking about what they are thankful for, Guess Who? will tune them into what others around them are thankful for too. PICK-UP STICKS Like regular pick-up sticks, the goal is to remove a stick from a haphazard pile without disturbing the others. However, by using colored sticks that represent different kinds of thankfulness — such as places, people, or food — you can make players think outside the box. This will ensure you get a wide range of creative, thoughtful answers whenever the kids pick up a stick. These modified games are great for helping your kids realize how much they have to be thankful for. Use these to spend some fun, educational, quality time with your family this Thanksgiving. THE ADVANCEMENT OF DENTAL VENEERS The Hollywood Veneers

Of the many cosmetic procedures to help people improve their smile and self-confidence, veneers are the most popular. Dental veneers address the problems of teeth that are broken or chipped, permanently stained or discolored, or crooked or misshapen, and they take care of any unwanted gaps between teeth. This noninvasive and simple process is why so many people prefer veneers over surgical procedures to improve smiles. THE STAR OF VENEERS Veneers are a relatively new product invented in the late 1920s by Dr. Charles Pincus. Dr. Pincus’ patients were mostly Hollywood stars, many of whom depended on their smiles while they were in front of the camera. He created an acrylic tooth cap that went over the actor’s tooth, attached by a removable adhesive. This gave a person the flexibility to wear the caps while they were being filmed and remove them once the filming was over. As they became more popular, people started looking for a more permanent solution. ENTER PERMANENT VENEERS Throughout the next few decades, people with tooth loss or disease turned to the new veneers as a way to improve their smile. This created a demand for longer-lasting caps and a more durable adhesive. Dentists began using porcelain or composites as veneers but were still having difficulties adhering them to the teeth. In the 1950s, Dr. Michael Bunocore discovered a way to lightly etch a tooth’s surface with a mild acid, allowing its surface to bond more easily with an adhesive. PORCELAIN VENEERS TODAY While many dentists use similar methods to attach veneers to teeth today, veneers are made with higher quality materials than ever before. Modern dental advancements give veneers a more natural look and longer lifetime, lasting 10–30 years before needing to be replaced or repaired. Veneers are applied within a short amount of time, giving patients the smile they want within a reasonable timeframe.

At Auburn Dental Center, we can apply veneers to teeth in just two visits. The first visit is to prepare the teeth, and the second is to bond the veneers to the teeth. Call our office today to make an appointment and learn more!

TOOTH SENSITIVITY What You Should Know

a regular basis, brushing and flossing your teeth as directed by your dentist, and keeping a healthy diet that avoids acidic foods and drinks. Using low abrasion toothpaste can also protect your teeth. TALK TO YOUR DENTIST If you have sensitive teeth, it’s important that you’re open and communicate with your dentist about the issue. They can use that information to find a solution that best suits your needs to prevent or reduce the sensitivity of your teeth. In addition to coming up with a treatment plan, your dentist can detect whether or not the sensitivity is caused by a more serious problem.

teeth don’t have enamel, which leaves them virtually unprotected. When a person eats or drinks something cold, hot, sweet, or acidic or even when they breathe in cold air, they can experience pain or discomfort in their teeth. HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN? Gums can recede for a variety of reasons. Brushing too hard or brushing with a hard- bristled toothbrush can damage the gums or the tooth’s enamel, exposing the sensitive dentin underneath. Eating or drinking acidic substances, such as soda or citrus products, can erode your teeth’s enamel over time. PREVENTING TOOTH SENSITIVITY One of the best methods to lower your risk of tooth sensitivity is to maintain your oral health. This includes visiting your dentist on

We love our community and its continued support! Thank you for your referrals to our practice and for trusting us with your care! Thank You! People with sensitive teeth may not be too enthusiastic about the changing weather or the temptation of sweets that the holiday season brings in abundance. But they are not without luck. Here is the why behind tooth sensitivity and how you can prevent it. TOOTH SENSITIVITY The term “tooth sensitivity” is a common phrase for a condition known as dentin hypersensitivity or root sensitivity. This occurs when the gums are pulled away from the teeth, from either periodontal disease or receding gums, exposing the root of one or several teeth. Unlike the exposed teeth, the roots of the

1. Heat oven to 425°F. 2. In a large pot, pour water over potatoes to cover by 2 inches. Salt water and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat and simmer gently for 10 minutes. 3. Thoroughly drain potatoes and let stand uncovered a few minutes to allow steam to escape and potatoes to dry slightly. Toss gently and season with salt. 4. Meanwhile, combine both oils in a large pan and heat in oven for 10 minutes. 5. Remove pan from oven and add potatoes, turning to coat thoroughly. Return to oven and cook for 30 minutes, turning every 10 minutes. 6. Toss in garlic and rosemary and cook 8-10 minutes, or until potatoes are golden brown. 7. Drain and serve. There are countless ways to prepare potatoes, but not all are created equal. For irresistibly crunchy outsides and deliciously creamy insides, try this recipe. The result is sure to be the star side at your Thanksgiving table. Burnished POTATO NUGGETS

CELEBRATING GIVING TUESDAY

Supporting the People You Believe In

hopes to encourage and spread generosity on a global scale using the hashtag #GivingTuesday. The website states that “... technology and social media could be used to make generosity go viral; that people fundamentally want to give and talk about giving.” Through massive social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, the individuals and companies participating in Giving Tuesday can spread their missions and messages all over the world, encouraging others to do the same. HOW YOU CAN CELEBRATE Now is the perfect opportunity to support your community and the causes you believe in. The best part of this holiday is that “giving” doesn’t just refer to donating money. People can give back by volunteering their time to help a nonprofit business, donating goods and food, or just buying a stranger some lunch. Even the smallest actions can have the biggest impact. If you’re interested in participating in Giving Tuesday, get together with your friends, family, sports team members, or neighbors to brainstorm on how you can give back. To learn more about how you can participate, visit GivingTuesday.org.

November is usually all about Thanksgiving, but it isn’t the only holiday that encourages generosity. Giving Tuesday is a phenomenal celebration in which millions of people from across the globe are inspired to spend 24 hours giving back to the communities they love. ORIGIN AND GOAL Giving Tuesday is celebrated every year on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, and this year, the holiday lands on Dec. 3! It was established in 2012 by the United Nations Foundation and New York’s 92nd Street Y as a response to consumer-driven holidays like Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The purpose of the holiday was to spread the spirit of giving, not only for the people in our nation but individuals across the world. The goal is “to create a massive wave of generosity that lasts well beyond that day and touches every person on the planet.”
