Wildcats and Vikings shake hands and butt heads SPORTS editionap.ca
ROCKLAND | The Vikings landed in Rockland to show the Ladycats how rugby rocks on The Rock. Rockland District High School’s Wildcats varsity girls played host in mid-April to the Vikings of Prince of Wales Collegiate from St. John’s, Newfoundland. The past week of shared friendly competition time on the rugby turf has proven a profitable experi- ence for both sides. “They’re really good company,” said Krista Bastien, a flanker with the Wildcats. The Vikings were in town as part of a YMCA-sponsored student exchange pro-
gram with RDHS. The Prince of Wales team is top-ranked in their province but Coach Roxanne Butler said the training handicap for the Vikings is a shortage of other teams to play against. The exchange programwith Rockland is a godsend for her players. “It’s been a great opportunity for the girls to get some more playing experience,” Coach Butler said. “To get some competi- tion like this has been awesome.” Besides a friendly pre-season exhibition tournament in Rockland on April 24, the Vi- kings took part in hosting a rugby seminar the following Friday. Later in May the Wild- cats head for Newfoundland for their week as billeted guests of the Vikings. “I’m looking forward to playing a tourna- ment against schools from that area,” Bas- tien said. Wildcats Coach Bill Foster is happy with the results of the exchange program too. The pre-season tournament with the Vi- kings has helped him finish evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of the Wildcats before the regular season begins May 1. “I think our backs are definitely the strength of our team,” Foster said. “We are going to be a young (player) team this year. So we’re gonna move the ball away from the big forwards and have our backs run- ning and scrumming.” The May 1 season home match at RDHS is against Vankleek Collegiate. Following the Newfoundland tour, the Wildcats face Rus- sell before the league semi-finals.
