Creating & Maintaing a Healthy Lifestyle TAKE ACTION 1028 S. Cedar Crest Blvd. Allentown, PA 18103 • 610-776-2005 • www.CedarCrestChiropractic.com October 2018 Dr. Paul Braadt My grandparents at their graduation in 1923

I’d like to re-introduce myself to you. I’m a third- generation chiropractor. My father, Henry Paul Braadt, and his parents were all chiropractors and were very passionate about their profession, as I am. It was by observing and experiencing their good work that I developed my own philosophy. I am passionate about helping you create and maintain a healthy lifestyle to age gracefully without pain and disease, with enough flexibility, strength, and energy, and with a sharp mind to focus on chasing the dreams you create. My grandfather emigrated from Germany before WWI and worked as an electrician in the docks of New York City. While he was working, he was struck across his back with an I-beam and became paralyzed. When seeking treatment, “Currently, we have an unprecedented health crisis in America. We are ranked at the bottom

my grandfather spoke to a chiropractor in Staten Island, and they told him that they couldn’t handle his condition. Instead, the chiropractor suggested that he should go to Palmer College in Davenport, Iowa, as they could take better care of him. So he and his wife loaded onto a train. Once they arrived, they were told that if he became a student, they would treat him for free. In the end, both he and my grandmother joined the college, became chiropractors, and got the treatment he needed to get back onto his feet. They graduated with 1,000 other students in 1923, guided by Dr. B.J. Palmer, son of D.D. Palmer, the Founder of Chiropractic. Their graduation picture is above. After graduation, they moved to Williamsport, PA, and started a practice. He used to see 100 patients a day and, at times during the Great Depression, exchanged treatment for food. My father, their only child, also became a chiropractor and practiced with his father for several years before his father retired in 1962. My father was in the Navy during WWII, and after the war, he enrolled in Palmer College through the GI Bill and practiced in Williamsport, where I grew up. I graduated from Palmer College also, in 1976, practiced as an associate for a few years, and opened my practice here on Cedar Crest Blvd in 1981. My father and my mother, Elizabeth, later moved to Allentown, and my father joined me and practiced until he retired in 1985. Many of you knowmy mother, Elizabeth, who managed our front desk until her retirement at age 79. What a joy to work with them both!

Being raised in a chiropractic family, we didn’t turn to pharmaceutical drugs to fix our health problems. I’m the oldest of six children — three boys and three girls. Barring an emergency, whenever we got hurt or felt sick, we got adjusted, which helped stimulate the nervous system, and used other natural remedies. My parents focused on maintaining a healthy lifestyle of eating whole foods, getting proper sleep, moving our bodies, and engaging in productive work. This lifestyle influenced me tremendously, guiding my family and me to a lifetime of good health. Of course, medicine can work miracles in emergencies, but the idea is not to need a miracle. Often, this year’s medical miracle is next year’s class action suit. Many people are not aware that there is a way to handle health problems without drugs or surgery. They aren’t aware of what it takes to get well or are unsure of where to start. Information frommedia and special interest groups tells us that pharmaceutical drugs can solve all our health problems, but that’s not true. While taking medications can be extremely helpful and lifesaving with acute health problems, lifetime drug dependency should be avoided. Drugs should in no way be a requirement to live out the rest of your life, unless absolutely necessary. Currently, we have an unprecedented health crisis in America. We are ranked at the bottom of all industrialized countries tracked by the World Health Organization (WHO) at the UN, and prescription pharmaceuticals are the fourth

THE DIRTY D OZ E N Dr. Braadt’s Nutrition Tips

TRANSPORTATION SAFETY TIPS Protect Your Children During Their Commute

Nutrition is the process of obtaining the food necessary for health, growth, and energy. The word nutrition is derived from the Latin word “nutrire,” which means to feed or nourish. Nutrition is something you can’t ignore, unless you want a body that is overweight, tired, stressed, and prone to illness. Providing your body with the necessary nutrients from food and supplements is THE KEY to having a body full of energy to live your life to the fullest. Here are two tips that can help you: Eat Whole Foods Eating whole foods instead of refined foods is vital to a healthy, energetic body. Whole foods are foods with little to no refining or processing and containing no artificial additives or preservatives. For example, avoid refined carbohydates as much as possible, such as breads, pastas, and sugars, and eat whole foods, such as cruciferous vegetables. Cruciferous veggies are plants from the cabbage family, such as broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and radishes. Proteins are also important — eat 3–7 ounces per meal, depending on your weight, age, and active lifestyle. Remember to include healthy fats, such as avocado, unprocessed cheese, nuts, and seeds. Download the Free App Dirty Dozen I discovered a helpful free app called Dirty Dozen that you can download onto your Apple or Android phone. It helps you choose which fruits and vegetables to buy organic. The app has two sections, the Dirty Dozen and the Clean 15. The Dirty Dozen lists foods that have the most pesticide residue of all produce, while the Clean 15 lists the types of foods that have the lowest levels of pesticides. Staying away from the toxins in your environment is a sure way to reach the healthy lifestyle you want, and nutrition plays a big part in that. Eating organically grown produce that has minimal pesticides can benefit you greatly. I invite you to download this app today before you head out on your next grocery shopping spree. If you’re unable to download the app, please visit our front office for a handout! My staff and I know how crucial the health of your body is, along with maintainning a healthly lifestyle. I’m not a saint, but I made the decision many years ago to simplify my eating with good nutrition and, at almost 66 this December, it’s paid off. If you want to grow old and live a productive life without pain and disease, filled with energy, I invite you to do the same. We’re a team here at Cedar Crest Chiropractic, and we’re here to help you however we can. Stay tuned for knowledge in each newsletter, and as we all know, knowledge is power! I want to help you create and maintain a healthy lifestyle that is free of pain and full of energy so you can chase your dreams, big and small!

With the school year in full swing, it never hurts to be reminded of the importance of transportation safety. Keeping your child safe on their commute starts with knowing which method works best for you and

the rules that accompany each. Taking the School Bus

According to the United States Department of Transportation, the school bus is the safest means of transportation to and from school. Buses are built to withstand a hit and distribute the damage throughout the vehicle, keeping its passengers safe and sound. Knowing basic bus safety will help kids be mindful when taking the bus. Before the school year starts, take your children to the bus stop and show them where they should stand when the bus approaches — a minimum of three large steps or 6 feet from the street. Tell your kids about the importance of sitting still and not standing in the bus while it’s in motion. Kids on the Road Whether your child is biking, walking, or even skateboarding, it’s vital that they know and follow the rules of the road. All children should practice road safety behavior, such as riding on the right side of the road, wearing helmets, stopping at stop signs, and watching out for cars. Internalizing these habits will help them stay aware of their surroundings when traveling to and from school. Sharing the Road When school starts, the roads become even more cluttered than usual. On top of people heading to work, there are large buses making frequent stops, parents rushing to drop their kids off, and young kids biking or walking to school. With the added tension on the road, it’s important to be alert and move cautiously. Slowing down in school zones or around young pedestrians will keep you vigilant and could potentially save lives. Teach your kids to be prepared and safe on the road to ensure that they have a healthy and safe school year.

The Monsters Some Believe Are Real 3 of the Weirdest Cryptids in Pseudoscientific History

The Bunyip When European settlers began edging into the territory of Aboriginal Australians, they heard whispered, frightened tales of a man-eating “water spirit” that lived in the lakes and rivers of the area. Descriptions of the creature varied wildly.

There are people who would have you believe that monsters live among us all year long. These individuals, referred to as cryptozoologists (or just “wishful thinkers” by their skeptics), believe a hidden animal kingdom exists just beyond the edge of mainstream biological science. Here are three of the weirdest, almost- certainly imaginary “cryptids” to ever capture the human imagination. The Jersey Devil that when one Jane Leeds gave birth to her 13th child, she was dismayed to add yet another kid to her responsibilities. She cried out, “Oh, let this one be the devil!” Shortly after the child was born, the boy was transmogrified into a twisted creature with the malformed head of a goat, leathery wings, and a thrashing, forked tail. After slicing the midwife with its ragged claws, the beast flew up the chimney and fled into the trees. Hundreds of years later, the beast is still said to creep the backwoods on its cloven hooves, glowering from the blackness with shining, red eyes. According to legend, the 1.1 million-acre Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey are home to more than just birds and deer. The story goes

The monster was alternately described as an enormous starfish, an alligator-like creature with the head of an emu, or a massive bulldog-faced beast. But accounts held one thing in common: The monster claimed the lives of any who dared camp near its watery domain. The Loveland Frog One night, near Loveland, Ohio, a man reportedly beheld a trio of bipedal frog-

people slapping their webbed feet along the side of the road. If that wasn’t enough, one even had a magic wand, which shot sparks as the man ran off. Apparently, not all mythical beasts are bloodthirsty monsters; some are a little more Kermit than Cthulhu.
