She ultimate- ly served only 18 years, and during the last two years of her sentence was permitted to regularly leave the prison to run her fashion and jewellery business in Milan. An appeals court decided that the 67-year-old Mrs Reggiani, despite having ordered her ex-husband's murder, would receive a large annual sum from her husband's legacy, due to an agreement that Maurizio signed in 1993, two years before his murder. Accord- ing to a contract signed in St. Moritz, Maurizio, the grandson of the brand's founder, Guccio Gucci, agreed to pay his ex-wife 1.1 million Swiss francs annually for the rest of her life. The court wrote: “The criminal act committed by Patrizia Reggiani has no connection to the agreement with Maurizio Gucci. It is irrelevant. Despite the layered “real life” drama behind a façade of glamour, Gucci has been, and remains, synonymous with “damned perfectionism” - which is just as fasci- nating from the front row of a fashion show as it is from the back rows of a cinema auditorium. After the charismatic Tom Ford reinvented the house's stylistic heritage in the mid-1990s, it is now under the eclectic influence of poetic designer Alessandro Michele, who has used his creative power to consciously distance himself from the dark aura of everything brought by Gucci's fatal elegance.
