A bel Ferrara didn’t make any effort to ease my job. I arrived for the in- terview nervous, like when you arrive in the company of a man whose films you grew up with, whose films horrifiedyouandopenedyoureyes.Hewasn’t particularly polite or even smiling, nor did he eye me pityingly in the way one looks at silly fans. This native New Yorker who was raised in the Bronx still nurtures part of the image from the time of the films Bad Lieutenant or King of New York. He’s irritable, with pretty much everything getting on his nerves; he swears a lot still angry at the system, at Amer- ica, at Trump, at the world... It would be stupid to expect anything else, and also disappointing. It was a great pleasure for me to see how Ferrara, despite being almost 70 years old, still nurtures the same fire that once led to one of our critics dubbinghim“apyromaniacoftheNewYork Fire Department”. - Have you managed to tour Belgrade, to meet the people; what are your impres- sions? I ask him as we both observe the pan- orama of the city from the terrace of one Bel- grade hotel. - What do you think? Do I like this city? Well, were you at the premiere of my movie last night? I think everything’s clear... I look at him with an expression that could only state clearly that I have no idea what he just said to me, which I explain openly. - Okay, I see that you don’t know how things stand. There aren’t many cities where documentary film festivals are organised. If you go to one of those exalted cities to at- tend those famous festivals, do you know who’s in the auditorium? The jury! Only the members of the damned jury; there are no people to watch the films, as they’re not in- terested. My film was watched in Belgrade by a full hall, man! Full! People love films here and come to watch them even when they’re not blockbusters. What is there not to love about this city? re se celu noć i plaši moje dete, imam želju da ga zadavim. Da li idem okolo, skupljam ljude i vodim ih u svoj kre- vet? Ne, ne radim to. To je sad moja kuća, tu su dve strane trga, parka, dve strane sveta, dve strane svega… Stalo mi je, ali pomažem onako kako umem, radeći svoj posao. Filmovi, umetnič- ka dela, pesme, knjige, sve to može da okrene svet naopačke i promeni na- še živote. Radim ovo zato što je meni važno i ostaje mi da se nadam da će imati nekog uticaja. Čoveku koji je snimio film Kralj Njujorka, koji je odrastao i nastao u tom gradu, Njujork ne nedostaje. O njemu govori bez trunke nostalgije ili se bar tako predstavlja. Kaže da taj grad više nije njegov, da ga ne prepo- znaje i ne poznaje. – Nemam ja ništa više s Njujorkom, to je igralište za milijardere, a ne zna normalne ljude i zato me ne interesu- je. Pominješ Bronks, a to je druga pla- neta. Taj moj Njujork, čoveče, pa mi ni- smo znali da postoji Menhetn. Tamo negde je bio, kod Empajera. Iz Brukli- na smo u njega buljili preko reke, sa- mo jednu stanicu metroa i cele svetlo- sne godine udaljeni. Sad taj Menhetn može da se ogradi zidom, jer tamo nije moguće živeti u minijaturnim stano- vima od 10.000 dolara mesečno. Vi- dim, sviđa ti se Njujork, imaš li ti pa- ra da tamo živiš? Nemam ja ni blizu toliko para, ali
nećeš ti meni, Ferara, uništiti snove o Njujorku, mislim se ja. Podsećam ga da je i taj njegov Njujork bio jeziv, surov, brutalan, da je ulice u svojim filmovima bojio u crveno od silne prolivene kr- vi. Podsećam ga na taj Njujork iz Zlog poručnika (Bad lieutenant ) i na mah- nitog Kajtela, a Ferara mi se smeje… – Šta je vama u Srbiji sa tim fil- mom? Svi ste ovde fanovi zlog poruč- nika! Ali da se vratimo na priču. Tako je, ja se obračunavam sa brutalnošću urbanog života, moji junaci jesu soci- opate, ali oni pokušavaju da se isku- pe. Poručniku se, obeznanjenom od droge, priviđa Isus i on iskreno traži oproštaj i kaje se. Harvi je to tako sjaj- no i uverljivo odigrao. Ali nije jedna halucinacija dovoljna da se promeni život. Da li on može da dobije šansu da se iskupi? Verovatno ne, film se za- vrši pre toga… – Kako verovatno? Pa ubili ste ga na kraju filma! – A otkud ti znaš da je on mrtav? Pa u Fiftija Senta (50 Cent) ispalili su devet metaka, pa je čovek živ. Možda oprost stigne u Zlom poručniku dru- gi deo. Ne znamo mi da li je Harvi mr- tav, mi samo vidimo da u njega pu- caju i to sve. A svako može da dobije oproštaj, jer je suština života u sami- losti. Pokušajte da razumete ljude i da saosećate, tu počinje sva duhovnost ovog sveta, odatle dolaze i Isus, i Bu- da, i Muhamed, i svi ostali. Nađi na-
