this can be seen on one of the Basilica’s mosaics dating back to the 13 th century. Whatever the case in reality, this chapel was destroyed, rebuilt and renovated many times. It was set ablaze in the 10 th centu- ry and gained a shape similar to today’s in the 11 th century. The church itself was modelled on eastern examples, specifical- ly Hagia Sophia and the churches of the then Constantinople, because Venice then maintained vibrant trade relations with Byz- antium. The church contains an incredible 8,000 square metres of mosaics. Created over the course of eight centuries, mainly in gold, these works are the source of the nickname of the basilica, which is known as the Golden Church. If you are able, visit this cathedral at different times of the day to see how the colours and scenes change depend- ing on the amount of light. It was a matter of prestige to contribute to the beautifica- tion of the church, but most of the treasures contained within it arrived after the Fourth Crusade. Crusaders brought the plundered treasures of Byzantium and Constantino- ple to the Basilica in 1204, when the city known today as Istanbul was conquered.

The most important“plunder”is repre- sented by four bronze Roman horses, known as the Triumphal Quadriga, which adorn the façade of the basilica to be admired by pas- sersby, including Petrarca. They remained there until savagely stripped by Napoleon and taken back to Paris in 1797, only for them to be returned in 1815. During the 20 th cen- tury, damp and pollution already began de- stroying the precious quadriga, so today you can see a replica on the exterior, while the original horses are located inside the basilica. But if that’s not enough to leave you in awe of the church’s beauty, the next step will surely knock you off your feet. Because next you should see the Pala D ‘Oro, this church’s Byzantine style high al- tarpiece, one of the most magnificent ex- isting works of gold and jewels. The altar depicts Christ, angels, prophets and saints, and until being stolen by Napoleon it con- tained 4,000 jewels, including 1,300 large pearls, 100 amethysts, 300 sapphires, 300 emeralds, 80 rubies... Today the wall con- tains“only”around 2,000 examples of pre- cious stones. It has also been relocated to the church museum.
