CAPTAIN MIŠA’S MANSION KAPETAN MIŠINO ZDANJE The building known as Captain Miša’s Man- sion was erected in 1863 by Czech archi- tect Jan Nevola as Belgrade’s then tallest and most eminent building. It was intend- ed to be the home of the ruling couple who were fated not to rule - Đorđe Karađorđević and Sara, the daughter of Captain Miša An- astasijević, a wealthy merchant. Howev- er, in the meantime the political situation changed and spoiled their plans, and Cap- tain Miša, as a great philanthropist, be- queathed the building to his“fatherland” in order to house various institutions of cul- ture and education of the then Principality of Serbia. That purpose of the building has been preserved to this day, with this edifice now accommodating the Rectorate of the University of Belgrade.
