I f you walk down Vasina Street, then contin- ue on to Uzun Mirkova, you will nd your- self in a part of the city that you can freely re- fer to as its artistic central vein. Located there are the Ethnographic Museum, Kolarac Endow- ment Hall, the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra, but also Our Museum of Film, the permanent ex- hibition of the Yugoslav Cinematheque. In front of the entrance you will be greeted by a smiling, brilliant Karl Malden, who was born as Mladen Sekulović to a Serb father and a Czech mother, and who conquered the world, winning an Os- car for his role in the lm A Streetcar Named De- sire and performing brilliantly in Patton and On the Waterfront... Alongside him smiles the face of the legend- ary Mija Aleksić, and both of them welcome visitors totheYugoslavCinemathequeanditspermanent exhibition, called Our Museum of Film, which en- compasses in its collection valuable exhibits from the history and prehistory of lm and which pre- sents the development of domestic lm art. The Yugoslav Cinematheque is among the world’s old- est lm archives, and is also one of the most valu- able holdings, as it preserves more than 100,000 lms in various formats, while the permanent ex- hibition presents only a fraction of the wealth it possesses. A large number of exhibits are exhibit- ed on two levels, though moving pictures natural- ly dominate. Speaking to Elevate, Cinematheque Director Jugoslav Pantelić says that the new ex- hibition was prepared carefully and over a long time, and that it has only presented part of its most valuable possessions to the public. “The most commonly represented elements are naturally moving pictures, but there are also valuable elements from the technical collection and objects in legacies, though we haven’t avoid- edthebenetsofmoderntenology.Wehavebeen able to display huge numbers of lm posters and inserts, because the monitors allow one to replace the other. Our lm museum is important because it educates young people and all guests of Serbia when it comes to the development of lm, from the very beginning to the end of the 20 th centu- ry. If you’re interested in the culture of the coun- try, our rich cinematography, it is extremely im- portant that you inform yourself in the right way and nd out how it developed and acquired the attributes it has in the world today,”says Pantelić. In front of the public every day will be the Imperial Panorama which is exhibited along with other elements from the prehistory of lm on the lower level of the exhibition. Here you will be able to see the Edison’s kinetoscope, the Lumi è re broth-
