The Journal The Cornwall & District Labour Council is observing the National Day of Mourning for workers who have been killed, in- jured or made ill on the job. The ceremony will take place at the Work- ers’ Monument in Lamoureux Park on Fri- day in Cornwall at 11:45 a.m. After the ceremony, lunch will be served at the RCAF Wing 424 Club adjacent to the park. The theme of the 2012 ceremony is “Strength from our past/Strength for our future”. The history of workplace activism for safety legislation is a long one; it began with an Elliott Lake miners’ strike that led di- rectly to the Occupational Health and Safety Act of 1972 and continues today. After the Christmas eve construction tragedy in Toronto in 2009, a Ministry of Labour Review Panel recommended 46 changes to make workplaces safer. In 2010, the last year for which there are statistics, 1,014 workers in Canada lost their lives and thousands more experienced de- bilitating injuries and impairment. In the industrialized world, Canada has one of the highest rates of workplace death and injury. That has to change, the labour council says. “No job is worth dying for, and if cor- porations or their representatives willfully neglect health and safety, they should be held criminally responsible. “ Since the introduction of co-operative ed- ucation, Ontario schools have been very in- volved in teaching workplace safety and student posters and writing on the subject will be recognized at lunch after the cere- mony. The general public is welcome to attend and participate in the ceremony and gather at the RCAF wing for lunch and presenta- tions of student awards afterwards.
