RAJHSTAG / REICHSTAG SVEDOK MOĆI, ALI I NEMOĆI A WITNESS OF POWER AND POWERLESSNESS
T he Reichstag, the building of the Ger- man parliament, is far more than its title implies. It can serve as a histo- ry textbook, a witness of division, the power and powerlessness of Germany. It was burned and smashed, overcome and forgotten. The Reichstag hosted political sessions from 1894 to 1933, when it was engulfed by a fire that Hitler blamed on communists and used as a reason to revoke all civil rights. The Nazis didn’t consider restoring the building, but the Russians still occupied it as a symbol of their conquest of Germany and lofted the Soviet flag of victory above it. In 1949 the city of Bonn be- came the capital of West Germany, and the Re- ichstag was forgotten. Although its renovation began in the 1950s, the building was used on- ly sporadically during the years of the Cold War. It was only when the reunification of Germa- ny was announced in front of this building in 1990, shortly after the fall of the wall, that it be- gan being used again. It gained its modern ap- pearance and transparent dome in 1999 (de- signed by British architects Fosters & Partners). This dome is not only the perfect example of energy efficient design, but also a wonderful symbol of political transparency and democ- racy, the path to which was finally found. A vis- it to the Reichstag is free of charge and a must! You’ll enjoy the sun and wonderful views of Ber- lin, surrounded by the ghosts of Soviet soldiers and Nazis, but also the ordinary residents of Berlin who gathered in front of the Reichstag to show their solidarity on various occasions.

R ajhstag, zgrada nemačkog parlamenta, mnogo je vi- še od toga. Može da poslu- ži kao udžbenik iz istorije, svedok podele, moći, ali i nemoći Ne- mačke. Bio je paljen i rešetan, osvajan i zaboravljan. U Rajhstagu se zaseda- lo od 1894. do 1933, kada je izgoreo u podmetnutom požaru za koji je Hi- tler okrivio komuniste i posle kojeg je ukinuo sva građanska prava. Na- cistima nije palo na pamet da zgradu obnavljaju, ali bez obzira na to, Ru- si su je zaposeli kao simbol osvaja- nja Nemačke i na nju stavili sovjet- sku zastavu pobede. Bon je 1949. postao glavni grad Nemačke, a Rajhstag je zaboravljen. Iako je pedesetih počelo renovira- nje, u godinama Hladnog rata zgra-
da je korišćena tek sporadično. Tek kada je 1990. ispred nje proglaše- no ponovno ujedinjenje Nemačke, kratko nakon pada Zida, počela je ponovo da se koristi. Svoj današnji izgled i transparentnu kupolu do- bio je 1999. (rad britanskih arhite- kata Fosters & Partners). Ta kupola ne samo da je savršen primer ener- getske efikasnosti nego i divan sim- bol političke transparentnosti i de- mokratije, do koje je na kraju ipak pronađen put. Uživaćete u suncu i divnom pogledu na Berlin, okruženi duhovima sovjetskih vojni- ka, nacista, ali i običnih stanovnika Berlina, koji su u raznim prilikama izlazili pred Rajhstag i pokazivali da su složni.
