SPOMEN-CRKVA CARA VILHELMA / KAISER WILHELM MEMORIAL CHURCH OKRNJENI ZUB POMIRENJA A BROKEN TOOTH OF RECONCILIATION

A s you walk along Kurfürsten- damm, one of Berlin’s largest avenues, known for its plane trees and expensive designer outlets, it is impossible to overlook the church ruins that Berlin residents say are reminiscent of a broken tooth. This old Neo-Roman style church, built at the end of the 19 th century in honour of Wilhelm I, was almost completely destroyed dur- šena, zahvaljujući stanovnicima Za- padnog Berlina, koji su izašli da pro- testuju protiv rušenja, ostavljena je da podseća na užase rata, ali po- red nje je sazidana nova - sa mo- dernim tornjem od čelika, betona i stakla, koji se, iako je teško pove- rovati, vrlo dobro uklopio sa sta- rom ruševinom.

ing World War II. Rather than being com- pletely demolished, it was left – thanks to the residents of West Berlin coming out to protest the demolition – as a reminder of the horrors of war. However, a new one was built next to it, with a modern tower made of steel, concrete and glass, which – although it may be difficult to imagine – fits very well alongside the old ruins. The old church was the only one in the

area that managed to resist the bombing of World War II to a certain extent. It to- day represents a symbolic anti-war mon- ument of reconciliation, given that it con- tains three artworks that symbolise the reconciliation of the English, Russian and German people – the Stalingrad Madon- na, the Virgin of Volgograd and a memo- rial plaque dedicated to the Protestant martyrs murdered by the Nazis.
