Crna Gora kakvu ne poznajete / Montenegro as you’ve never seen it before

W ho would have hoped that the highlanders and their girls would learn to dance the tango and thus become ambassadors of this very sensual dance? Prior to being conquered by tango danc- ers from around the world, Kolašin was known to skiers and nature lovers, but it was only with the arrival of dancers from all over the world that this pretty town nes- tled in the mountains of northern Monte- negro truly came to life with dance. And they dance everywhere, because tango dancers conquer territory with open-air dance events, so – apart from on the main square – they dance at the foot of Bjela- sica under the cable car, in the Biograds- ka Gora national park, in the rain, while there were also those who would dance on the conquered mountain peaks of Ko- movi or Bjelasica. During the 18 days of the camp, Kolašin’s primary and secondary schools are transformed into living hives of tango, where all tango fruits are picked: embrac- es, feelings, freedom, consciousness and the joy of the body and dance techniques. And it all began eight years ago, when the tango arrived in Kolašin, when daily classes began being held, and after this very intimate and warm Argentinian dance survived the Montenegrin winter, a new era began in the culture and tourism of this place. Instead of fantasising about departing bound for big cities, most young Kolašin natives have started to dance and to em- brace, not separating themselves from their “đedovina” [grandfatherland], which turned out to be extremely talented when

– Ljudi, priroda, ples, druženje, sve me ovde očarava – kaže on.

it comes to dancing. And then foreigners also started arriving. The international tango camp in Kolašin was founded by Kolašin native Darko Dožić and Belgrader Sonja Živano- vić, who have been teaching tango togeth- er in Belgrade for 11 years. After devoting one summer to teaching his“brothers”and sowing a tango seed, it turned out that the tough Montenegrin soil would prove fer- tile for the tango. It was initially Belgraders who came to dance between the moun- tains, but then, gradually, the camp began welcoming ever more foreigners. - We promoted tango as a way of life. It seemed pretty discouraging that some- thing could be started there, but we were crazily enthusiastic. Given that the locals had learned to dance (Kolašin is actually the community with the most tango danc- ers per capita), it was logical for us to fuse nature and tango. And that’s how local tan- go dancers, the beauty of the Kolašin area and the brand of Europe’s largest Tango Natural school become part of the tour- ist offer, says Darko, explaining how the camp developed. - If I hadn’t mastered dancing the tan- go, I’d probably never have come to Kolašin. The feeling of dancing at the foot of the mountains, the people that you meet from around the entire world, the philosophy of tango and embracing – that always brings me back to this place, says Belgrader Tijana. Her friend Danica says that the tan- go camp always brings her a sense of joy. - Here I gradually relax and connect, first with myself and other dancers, but mostly with nature, says Danica, who at the camp most likes dancing with Italians and hiking in the mountain. - That’s why Kolašin and tango are bet- ter than the seaside, says Danica, happi- ly recounting her impressions. Sebastiano comes from Italy to Kolašin every year.“Peo- ple, nature, dance, socialising, everything enchants me here.” This year’s camp was attended by over 400 dancers from all around the world. The camp has been awarded for bring- ing ever more guests to the town and for engaging the entire local population in its activities. - We are recipients of the most pres- tigious award in tourism from the Nation- al Tourism Organisation, because we are the biggest event ever to have been or- ganised in northern Montenegro. We are also included in the “Don’t Miss Out” list of nine Montenegrin festivals. And the locals are also fascinated by what they see. They come and watch how people dance, with admiration, says Duško Ra- ketić, a tango dancer from Kolašin.
